Marlon ‘L. IVLIss Bonnie Grattan and O01. Dan beinl 1'9- iurned the winners in the four classes raced. Keen racing featured the entire program with the usual upsets oc- curring that kept the colorful holiday crowd in a high state of excitement from the mccnent Vis- count Alexander, Governor Gen- vral of Canada declared the Fair officially open until the flllI-I. Hit was finished. 1n:erspersed between the heats was the usual fine vaudeville pro- gram that is always part and par- cel of the event, with the per- formers drawing Nell deserved ap- plause for their efforts. Th0 meeting continues today with four more classes/scheduled im- thla afternoon and a night racing program also scheduled. Feature event this afternoon will he the Free For All Trot and the classy bunch of trotters that is entered is expected to provi e many thrills before the winner is declared. ' Four Year Old Futurity Billy McVey, showing a world of pacing ability, was too good for the field in the first event on the card. chalking up a straight heat victory with three evenly rated miles, the fastest being the second heat when he went the mile in 2:12 2-5. Getting the word in the first mile Merle Direct went right. to the front on the first turn to lead the fieid of eight starters around to the quarter pole. Here the winner made his move to go into the lead and from there on was nsver headed. The drives got un- derway at the three quarter pole but there was no catching the Hooper-owned horse. but never- theless the crowd got a big thrill as Johnny Kalmuck, eighth at the halfway mark, came through with a burst of speed in the final part of the mile to place second. The winner made every post a winning one in the second mile. But again the fans saw close bat- tling for the other positions. At the half the field were pretty well strung out but as they hit the stretch the second trip around they were pretty well bunched. Positions were changing rapidly in the last part of the mile, with O.K. Volo coming very fast in the last few yards to beat out Ola ifiudlong for the runner-up posit- Oil. Surfing in last place after win- hifl; the first two heats, Billy moved up to second place by the time the quarter had been reach- ed in the final mile. and as they hit the backstretch the second time around had again headed his field. O. K. Volo, going to a drive at the seven elghthv pole. cut down the leader's margin as they raced down the stretch but he . was still half a length back as the winner paced under the wire. i Victoria Driving Club 2:19 Trot Displaying her best form of the season and given great drives by veteran driver ‘Tyndall Sempie, Marlon L. furnished the first up- set of the afternoon by trotting off with a straight heat victory in a field of eight horses. Going SW9)‘ on the rail the first trip down aha went right to the front with Lusticia, pre-race favorite ‘"91"!!! in behind her. Positions failed to change for the first tliree quarters of the mile as they withheld their drives, but from that Point to the wire the fans aaw a treat battle with Lziisticia and Quakers Boy both setting out after the flying leader. They couldn't quite make it, Lusticis finishing a length back with Qliflkerb Boy another stride be- hind in third place and the ro- Vlislnder putty wall strung out. Lusticia tried for the lead right after they were sent away but had to take back as they hit into the backstretch. The field was strung out in a line as they trotted by the stands the first time but from the seven eighths pole on they all went to drives; again it was Lusticia who furn- ished the opposition for Marion 1'... but again she couldn't quite make the grade, being a. length behind as the winner trotted uh"- d-er the wire. i The third and final heat pro- duced the best racing of the class. Beaverdale got of! to the front to lead the field around the back- stretch. Here Peerless Hanover trotted into the picture to take over command but in the rapidly changing picture of the race Billy Kalmuck took a turn at leading. Halfway down the home stretch the final time Billy was still in the van but Marion 1..'s closing rusb carried too much speed as she won the mile with a length and a half to spare over the Kal- muck horse. Carveil Bros. 2:29 Pace Miss Bonnie Grattan furnished another upset to the program when she paced of! with the last two heats after finishing fourth in the first mile. Money Musk. favored to win, went away on high only to lose the lead at the quarter pole to Babe Britten and the Babe. paying over $28.00 for a two dollar ticket on the parl- mutuels, was never headed during the rest of the mile. Money Musk and Aibegweit Milady both went to drives at the three quarters but couldn't catch the smooth pacing Babe Britten. Money Musk was second, a length to the good over Abegwelt lvfilady. with the other five horses closely bunched a couple of lengths further back. Getting away fast Money MW! shot to the front ‘before the back- stretch. had been reached. By the stands, up the backstretch and past the three quarters he still showed the way. Abegweit Milady pacing on the outside. showed 1H front as they hit the top of the stretch as Money Musk jumped it 017, but in the stretch duel Miss Bonnie Grattari came from far back’ to head the Milady horse to the wire. Money Musk pulled up lame after his disastrous break. having to be taken of! the track in a trailer and was scratched for the third and final heat. ‘The race winner was never headed in the final mile. Abeg- welt Milady made an early bid before being forced to take back. As they reached the three quart- ers Bonnie, Abegweit Milady and Rhodola D. were closely bunched but in the battle down the stretch Monty Budlong. Peeing very fast. came up to take over the runner- up spot and finish just a half length behind the winner. Again battles for the remaining position were very keen. Perfection Ice Cream 2:19 Pace - Pacing a. storm in all three heats Colonel Dan chalked up the third straight heat victory of the afternoon as he outfooted Bald- ritz and Jerry Grattsn in all three heats. In the first mile Baldritz was showing in front at the three- quarters mark but in the last eighth of a mile Col. Dan came very fast to win the heat. Half way down the stretch Baldritr. after relinquishing the lead came on again, with’ the pair racing under the wire practically neck and neck, but the photo finish shot showed Col. Dan to be in front by a whisker. It was one of the best finishes of the diay with the winner paying of! 016.10 for a two dollar ticket. ‘In the second mile Bsidrlts a- gain made his bid from the three quarters pole but could not quite make the grade, while in the final mile the winner showed his pan- ing ability by eomlrq from h0- liind after the halfway mark lead 1111s beautifully.
