Some weeks ago Lord Salisbury in a public address hinted that the Christian missionaries in China had been nt fault and were, in part at least, the cause ofthe uprising against foreigners in that coun- try. It might have happened that the missionaries in the discharge of their dut- ies as preachers and teachers and without _ fault on their part may have been an in- citing cause. For the doctrines of Christ- \ ianity have from the beginning antagon- . ised the heathen among whom they have A been proclaimed. But Lord Salisbury evidently meant more than this and his speech has for that reason challenged much criticism and some indignant den- ials whenever the English language is l spoken. l l I 1 your order with The general expression of sentiment in the press and churches cf Christian lands V has been to defend the missions and the missionaries with warmth and earnest- ness, and it must have given pleasure to these earnest, devoted and self-sacrificing ,men and women laboring in China and elsewhere to note how many speakers and writers espoused their cause in Britain and Americas. Had there been no dissent- ,ing note Lord Sallsburyls speech would have been nearly forgotten by this time, but from some new and unexpected quarters there has appeared a disposition to blame the missionaries in China. For instance, in t-he Bedford Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, fa few days ago, Rev. Dr. Halsey declared: “The missionary had his share in fo- menting this trouble and must bear his share of the blame. Some of the mission- aries have been politicians as well as Christians, and their grasping, ,selnsh attitude has helped to bring about the present condition.” And in the Calvary Baptist Church, New York, on the same day, Rev. Dr. McArthur, was reported as saying: ' “Those missionaries who combine civil authority with their religious instrubtion .are partly responsible for the condition of things in China." It will be observed at “once how vague and general these charges are.. We are given no inklingof the facts or allegations on whichfthey are based. We are not told whether these missionaries whom a lare the missionaries “who combine civil i Reverend Doctor holds up to scorn as “grasping and “selfish” were Anglicans, Presbyterians, Jesuits, Methodists or Baptists. Nor does the other Reverend" Doctor give us any intimation asto who authority with their religious instruction." This class must be a very small one if it exists at all. - If these New'Ycrk divines, who thus from their luxurious pulpits discredit, the much enduring missionaries in China, have any facts that would war- rant their hostile judgment they ought to being massacred in China, just as we have read several times repeated the ghastly. but false particulars of the massacre of, the governmental legations at Pekin. Missionaries in proportion to their num- bers, from their isolated situations in Most frequently such discussions andre- various parts cf the country, have been ci-iminations turn upon the alleged at- L `P.,"4`f". 'S fa fs ¢.§ ";Z."lC§> o viell authenticated facts to support heir extraordinary declarations. \Ve have indeed read of missionaries more exposed to mob violence than any other class of foreigners in China. Yet we venture to predict that when the story is fully told there will be found as large a proportion of missionaries livingas of any other class of Europeans or Americans in China. They have made friends wher- ever they have gone, and just because they have been less “grasplng," less “ selfish,” more just, humane and helpful to the Chinese people than any other class of foreigners in that distracted country.
