IN the First Methodist church the pas-
tor, Rev. G. M. Ciinipbell, preached at
both services to the usual large con-
gregations. llis morning theme was
Dent. 32-49, the incident recorded
being that Moses was sent up to the top
of Mount Nebo to see the promised land
and die. His text in the the evening
was found in Luke 9-23,24. E
THE usual services were conducted at
Grace Church yesterday. Rev.W J. Kir-
by preaching both morning and even-
ing. The morning text was from
Psalms 48: 9, and the theme was
Thankfulness This was the thanks-
giving sermon. as no service will he
held in Grace church on Thanksgiving
Day. The evening service was largely
attended, the theme being from Genesis
17-15,Sarah the Princess, or the danger
of beauty. This was the second ot an
interesting series of sermons on the
women of the Bible_
ORANGE Bnossous. A social event
of more than ordinary interest took
place last Thursday evening, 17th inst.,
at the residence or William Carruthers,
Esq., Tignish, when his daughter Miss
Minnie A., was united in marriage to
Mr. R H. Gordon, of Montrose. The
nuptial knot was tied by Rev. A. D. Mc-
Donald, B. L., in the presence of a
number of the most intimate rolatives
of the contracting parties. The bride,
who was very becomingly attired Was
attended by her sister, Miss Lizzie
Carruthers, while the groom was sup-
ported by Mr. W. A. Acorn, the popu-
lar and eilicient manager of the Central
ding march was sweetly rendered by
Miss Sibyl McFadyen. After the cere-
mony the gues‘s sat down to a sumptu-
ous wedding supper prepared and
served in a style befitting
the occasion. The remainder of the
evening was pleasanly whiled away
with music. social converse, etc. The
bride was the recipient of many beau-
tiful and costly presents attesting the
esteem in which she is held by her
many friends. Tas GUARDIAN extends
congratulations and wishes to Mr. and
Mrs. Gordon a happy and prosperous
journey through life.

AN adjourned sitting of the County
Court was held Saturday. when judg-
ment- was given in the suit of Angus
McDonald vs.the City of Charlottetown.
This being an action of damages for
negligence of Police Ollicers in not im-
prisoning John Ring after he had been
convicted on the 8rd of June last by the
Stipendiary Magistrate for drunkenness
and vagrancy, and sentenced to 90
days. This sentence was suspended by
'the Magistrate for two hours to enable
Ring to leave the city, but he remained
therein and on the following day broke

peg. from the words "God hath done

most vivid and eloquent way the won.

power was so pathetic that at times the
congregation was moved deeply. The
Archdeacon will speak again on \Ved-
nesday evening in St. Paul’s schoolroorn
and no one who desires a bless-
ing should fail to hear him.
The Bishop of Nova. Scotia. preached at
the evening service from 2 Cor. 8;9 on
the subject of “Convictions necessary
lo do good works,” It is impossible to
give an idea of the sermon in the space
at our disposal. but it is needless to
say it was a masterpiece of convincing
eloquence such as is not heard in
Charlottetown except when the Bishop
preaches. The church was packed to
the doors and the large audience
listened with wrapt attention for nearly
an hour.
THE services at the re-opening of St.
James’ Church yesterday were con-
ducted' morning and evening by Rev.
Mr. Gandier of Fort Massey Church,
Halifax. His text in the morn-
ing was found in Psalm 84. showing
how the prophet was longing for the
communion of the sanctuary and des-
cribing how blessed they are that dwell
therein ; how as he watched the
pilgrims on their way to Zion, in his
heart he longed to be with them; how
his soul did cry out for the living God
andthe pining and wasting away of-
his flesh was a result of the intensit of
house of God; not because of any at-
tractiveness about the structure; it was
not an enchanting or beautiful edifice
that so entrinced him_for the sanctuary
was not such. But he believed that
God did manifest himself there as he
did in no other place. “How a.miab‘e
are Thy tabernacles Oh Lord of Hostal”
’Twas not so much the house that made
it his goal. Neither did elabor-
ate teaching take the place of a warm
evangelical Christianity.As the pilgrims
jougneyed upwardto Zion they found
the road was one with many obstacles.
5ut through their persistent faith the
Lord gave them strength and carried
them over all the many trials. discour-
agements and disappointments. They
rejoiced as they went along; “from
strength to strength everyone appeareth
in/Zion before God.” Some people have
to be-ooaxodgchurch while others _re-.
quire to be riven, but the prophet
mentioned in the chanter could not rest-
or be content away from it. He even
envied the birds that built their nests
about the altars. In his sermon the
reverend gentleman,wl its dedicating to
God’s glory tire splei did church in
which they were now worshipping,
hoped it would be a home for all who-
.cried out for the living God. --Blessed
are they that dwell in the house of
God.” God is near to all who call up-
