The discovery of tuberculosis in the, herd on the Fulconwood farm, one of the best bred and most valuable herds in the province. is a matter which should set our farmers and our people generally seriously think- ing; our farmers, ,with a view to sav- ing their herds and maintaining their markets; our people generally, to check the ravages of tuberculosis which is still on the increase and a fruitful source of which is unques- tionably to be found in the herds of the province. The affected cattle on the Falcon- wood farm showed no previous symp- toms of the disease; nothing in their appearance would lead the casual observer to suspect disease; they were to all outward appearance suoh cat- tle as furnish daily meat and milk to the people everywhere. I-lad their milk or their flesh 'been used for hu- man food it would undoubtedly have added more oi those cases of tuber- culosis which so frequently startle us and which- cannot be accounted for either by heredity or environment. That tuberculosis is quite preval- ent among the cattle in’this pro- vince, and elsewhere, is undoubted. Wherever the tuherculinc test has been applied the disease has been found. ln some localities it has become quite prevalent, necessitating expensive measures for its eradication. It is not necessary to point out that the long- cr these measures are delayed the more difficult will the eradication be, ' vince the most skeptical that the Wedding Rings taniped, G. H. No doubt our federal and provincial governments will move in the matter, but large bodies move slowly and in the mean- time the disease, which is highly in- fectious, is spreading. Farmers who appreciate the seriousness of the sit- nation are having their herds inspect- ed at their own expense. This is pro- bably all tlfht will be done until in- spection ls made compulsory by leg- But what ol the indiscriminate use of uninspected meat? The City of Charlottetown has taken a commend- able step in providing for milk in- spection. This step, however, ls but a partial one. To guard against dis- eased milk while diseased meat may be sold openly in our markets is lit- tle more that giving citizens one form of poison while withholding an- other. The City Council, to make their work coriplete, should at once follow up their good work by enact- ing that all meat offered for sale must be thoroughly inspected both before and after slaughtering. There can be no doubt that a~large propor- tion oi the meat now used is diseas- ed and that a very large proportion of the tuberculosis so prevalent ln the province is due to the use of tuber- culous meat. The prompt action of the provin- ‘cial government with reference to the suspected cattle on Falconwood farm leads to the hope that means will und enough is now known to con- shortly be d€"iB¢¢i by W|1iC|1`f-l10°°m‘ pulsory annual inspection of all cat- tle -.vill be provided for. Next Tuesday, September third, the schools throughout the province will rc-open after the midsummer holidays. It is earnestly hoped that this year will see a cred. italile ro-opening, that the first day in fchoul will he a real day of prepa- ration, every pupil.in his or her place and all ready to take up the work together.
