Boats from Pownal and \Vo0d Islands are expected to participate. Toimrsrs and persons bent ou pleasure, should not forget that the Jacques Cartier runs a special excursion every Thursday after- noon at 3 o`clock to Orwell and return for but 25 cents, and every Saturday afternoon tO Crapaud and return for but 40 cents. These are delightful outings, as they give passengers so much pure sea air. Fon some time past complaint has been made in Charlottetown of a scarcity of good servants. In Ontario the same com- plaint is being made, “Mn JacobSpence. chief of the Ontario Immigration Bureau, said at Toronto that in recent years there had been a great falling off in the arrivals of young women. Fifteen years ago from 2,000 to 2,500 single young women came out yearly from the British Isles to Ont- ario and were employed chiefly as domes- tics. Now very few women come out,and the young women of the country are so fully employed just now in industrial oc- cupations that there is 'a remarkable scarcity of domestics.” Er.Li-:asLIE Norris.-We understand that M.r Stephen McDonald has sold his trotting horse Kruger to Mr. F. Raynor for a handsome sum.' Thi s place too is taking advantage of Canadafs growing time, which can be seen by the large num- ber of improvements in the places.- Messrs. Philip Williams, Chas. Mc-Nevin, and Chas. Hayes are buildingdarge barns. --Mr. G. F. Wash is building a new mach- ine house.-M. Harry Williams have in- vested in a wind mill which addsfquite a lofty appearance to the place, and last but not least Mr. WV. B. Hayes is building a large and up~to-date hen :house which will be fitted with all the modern conven- iences. We understand that Mr. Hayes intends going extensively into the poul- try business. The ReginaStandard, edited by Mr. J. K. Mclnnis, formerly of P. E. Island, says: -A new swindling game is reported from Minnesota. A well dressed stranger calls on a farmer and after being shown the farm expressed a desire to buy it, and of- fers a goodlprice, andif he strikes abargain pays down a sum, say $300 by way of il- lustration. Nothing further is heard from thisman, but two weeks later a man and woman stop at the farm [house for dinner. The woman takes a fancylto the place, and thinks she must have it. They than offer the farmer $1,000 morefthan the Brat mal offers, and the farmer decides that if he-can secure a release from his bargain he will let them have it. He then hunts up stranger No 1 and offers' to re- turn bis $300, and in addition to pay him $500 to be relieved from the bargain. This is satisfactory to the buyer, and he re- ceives the money. The second buyer then makes a payment of $100, and that is the last seen of them. The farmer is out just $400 in cash. DIED. A young girl named Campbell, daughter of Rev. Geo. M. Campbell, of Fredericton, a niece and the guest of Mrs. Archie Ran- dolph, also of Fredericton, whois sum- mering here, was coasting rapidly down Mount street and tried to turn into First avenue, when the cycle, becoming unmanageable, collided with thecorner residence of E.E. Burn- ham, and the rider`s head was dashed through a large window, the broken glass inflicting a. number of severe cuts about the throat and neck which necessitated over a dozen stitches. Had the wheel not first struck against a flower stand, which somewhat broke the force, the young girl would have received fatal in- juries. ' A TORONTO despatch of 23rd sayS:-- Three large congregations, at Westmin- ister, Cowan-avenue and Cooke’s churches greeted Rev. Dr. J ohh D. Paton yester- day, for forty years a Presbyterian mis- sionary among the cannibals of the New Hebrides Islands. The preacher, at all three serviees, enthralled his listeners with an account of his experiences in in- troducing Christianity among the savage tribes. Many of his co-workers were brutally murdered, and he himself has escaped many times; almost miraculous- ly, from danger far worse than death. He persevered, however, and he has now the proud satisfaction of know- of whom 300 are teachers and preachers of the Word of Christ. Dr. Paton ex SN diillculty, mastered the native tongue, reduced it to a written form, and then taught the people to sing hymns and read the Gospel. This and alot more informa- tion was given about the people of those far oil' islands, their habits and their cus- toms, and the whole showed what persev- erance can and is doing in spreading the Word of God among the heathen. _i ~ Nervous --Debility.
