E. l. ““ “"""*~>'"K"-r *:.w ‘ ‘ -;-_|;><--. -..--,..-.<>u.-->¢-»- KINGS-QUEENS- PRINCE -_-_- Prince Edward Island is divided into three Counties-King's, Queen's and Prince, with avrespectlve popu- lation of 20,445, 36,650 and 31,520, _ and with Capitals at Georgetown, Charlottetown and Summerside, Charlottetown, Capital of the Island Province, has a population of’ 12,381, is situated on one of the finest harbours in Canada, and was incorporated in 1855. The Civic Government is composed of a Mayor and eight Councillors, elected every two years. It is the scat of the Government of Prince Edward Is. land, the Legislature of the Prov- ince being the second oldest in Canada. The City has approxlmateé ly fourteen miles of paved, five miles of gravelled, three miles of water-bound macadam streets and twenty miles of concrete sidewalks. Adjoining the City is picturesque Victoria Park, with about one hun- dred acres of land facing the har- bour; at the entrance of the Park is Government House, official res- idence of His Honor Lieutenant Governor DeBlois. Five beautiful public squares are situated within the City. In the Legislative Council Chamber of the Provincial Build- ing, on September 1st, 1864, was held the conference of Canadian statesmen that resulted in the formation of the Dominion of Canada, The original ‘table around which the Fathers of Confederation sat is still to be seen in the Council Chamber. Many stately churches raise their spires skyward. The largest of these is the impressive St. Damian's Basilica, Roman Catholic, built in Gothic style and beautifully finish- ed; representative of further archi- tectural beauty are St. Peter's Cathedral and St. Paul's Church, Anglican; the Presbyterian edifices of St. James and Zion; Trinity United Church, the Baptist Church, th'e Central Christian, The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Be- deemer (Redemptorist Fathers), the Church of Scotland and the Salvation Army Citadel. Two Universities are located in the City-Prince of Wales College, recently rebuilt and having cele- brated its 74th year of College His- tory in May of this year.‘ 80MB‘!!! hundred students are enrolled. Just outside the City is situated St. Damian's University, a Roman Catholic Institution founded eighty years ago by the Rt. Rev. Bernard A. McEachern, first Bishop of Charlottetown. Educational intew ests are also served by four public schools, a modal school and two convents, Charlottetown boasts two _very fine hospitals while the Provincial Lunatic Asylum is also located within the City. Both hospitals are modern, up-to-date institutions with ‘accommodations in each for some eighty beds. The City is well policed and pos- sesses an efficient fire department. Branches of five banks arelocated in Charlottetown and several of the large financial houses have repre- sentation here as well. The retail business section is exceptionally J08" laid-out and bright, modern stores arc well equipped to serve the needs of purchasers. The great majority of business houses are E owned and operated locally ""4 ., very little revenue from retail business leaves the City.
