ciation closed to-day. It was probably the
most successful in the history of the
association.
Prof. J. \\'. Ilobertson, Dominion dairy
commission, was i:itroduccd as “the man
0 who has made Caiiazlalauious by the work
he has done for dair_viug."
He said that wliatever good name has
come to Canada has come through the
ability ofthe man on the farm, in the
. factory and wareliou.se. A hundred years
ago the lfniterl States had a smaller popu.
lation tliiin Canada has now. It never
had better opportunities and not as good
institutions, and he predicted that
Canada would have 00,00J,0LlJ people a
century hence, and their success would
depend largely on the foundation laid
within the next twenty-five years.
_ With the great difficulties the dairying
i interest has progressed in spite of them.
The difficulties can only be overcome by
good management.Knowledge and ability
arerequired.A man may know agrcat deal
and be very ignorant, a man may know
little and have great ability. There is a
decided difference between an intelligent
dairyman and a capable dairyman.
‘i Knowledge must he put to the test and
gain ability by practice.
The help given by the government has
been along these lines. Any help which
will develope intelligence and the love
and the capacity to work is the help most
desired. Intelligence, practical ability
and co-operation were the factors result-
ing in the success of the dairying interests
and the three means whereby progress
mm b¢'ma<i._-_ . He quoted statistics show-
1 ing the growth of tne industry in twenty
years from three and three quarter mil-
lions to nineteen and three quarter
millions of dollars.
Continuing, Prof. Robertson showed tl-ie
growth of the butter and bacon industry _
in thelnst- four years and other food pro-
ducts connected with dairying. Six big
branches of food products grew from $37,-
ooo,ooo to $o'1,ooo,ooo since 1896.

selection of seeds was also shown to boi
the profitable course to follow. The
same principle applies to the selection of
cattle and other animals.
With regard to tuberculosis, Prof.
Robertson said that consumption was a
house disease and thrives in a dark room.

more than two hours of sunshine.
