How Aided an Anxious American Mother, In travelling recently the writer chanced upon a typical ‘‘Ships that pass”’ story, that too sweetly human end sympathetic to be allowed to into oblivion Living in a little western town several years ago was a tender souled mother whose only son developed at an early age a beautiful voice and marked musical She seemed pass ability. Through the influence and as- sistance of friends, she was persuaded to allow him to go to London for study, where his voice and talent soon won for him a position among the choir boys in one of the leading cathedrals. In course of time, however, came a long interval during which the mother heard nothing from her beloved son, and in consequence became a prey to the most deadly fear and anxiety. Knowing no one in London to whom she could ap- peal, her mind instinctively turned in this soul stress to the one great heart in England that for years had stood to her for all that was most noble, strong, fine, womanly and sweet. So ina perfectly simple way she wrote a letter to George Eliot, stating the details of the case and giving the last known address of her son, addressing the letter simply, London, England. This artless appeal did not fail to reach its destination, and George Eliot lost no time in hunting up the homeless youth, though she failed to find him at the address giver. She traced him, however, from place to place until she came upon him ill and forlorn among entire strangers; and to him her coming seemed indeed like the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. The humane and sympathetic woman had the friendless boy taken immediately to her own home at Chelsea, where he Was nursed and cased for until restored to health. She of course wrote at once to relieve the anxiety of his mother, and provided ways and means for her to come to England to visit her boy. But by the time that the grateful mother had made the long voyage her son’s noble bene- factor had gene to join the ‘‘Choir Invie ible.’’ The Lewes’ sons, however, had become 80 interested in the youth, and were so pleased with the character of the moth- er’s letters and her naive, sweet faith in the power and love of their mother, that they continued to look after the boy, and extended to the unknown American upen her arrival on foreign shores every possi- ble kindness and courtesy, not the least of which was bestowing upon her in memory of the experience, a beautiful pearl pin that had for many years adorned the foremost woman of her time —it not of all times. No Wonder She Was Afraid. Talking about fish, says a writer in the Interior, reminds me of a little adventure that happened to one of our Boston au- thors last fall. He had been dining out, and arrived at his doorstep rather late He is not, let it be hastily said, a drink- ing man. He was greatly startled at hear- ing shrieks of a high feminine key rever- berating from the inside of his home. The sounds of fright were plainly Irish. and supposing that his cook was being murdered, at the least, he dashed in. There was a dim light in the hall. He followed the increasing noise into the un lighted dining-room. There he saw the uncertain outline of a woman blanching upon the dinizg table. *“O mercy, mercy, Mother of Help! Murthur! It’s bewitched Heln!’’ “For Heaven’s sake, Mary!’’ cried her master, now believing that his cook had gone clean out of her head, ‘‘keep quiet, and tell me what's the matter.’’ ‘*Holy Virgin!’’ howled the woman. “Not a dhrup have I been takin’ th-se three months. It’s shnakes—shnakes all over the floor!’’ Here she emitted a yell. *“‘Nonsense!’’ cried the man, sternly. But at that moment his foot stepped on a wriggling, soft hissing coil. He made a quick stride, and landed on another coll. Now, thoroughly alarmed himself, terri- fied as if encompassed by malign en- chantment, he, too, gave a howl, and landed plump in the middle of the din- ing-room table beside the cook. In the profound silence that fell he could hear Nations! I be! a strange, slimy rustling all over the room. “Shnakes?’’ yelled Mary, with re- doubled emphasis. Being out of reach of harm the gentleman recovered himself sufficiently to light a match and then the gas beside him. He looked over the edge of the table, and, behold, the floor was literally alive with smal! serpents The sight was horrible and ineredible. After some hesitation he screwed up cour- age enough to make a dive for the tongs, and in a few minutes he had filled the coal box with seventeen Anguillas, and had covered them up safely. The next morning his two boys woke him up, “Say, Pop, we had a bully time yester- day. We brought home a lot of eels, as inany as we could carry. They were all dead and frozen stiff like canes Can't we have ‘em for breakfast? Mary can cook eels. She says she can.” **Where did you put them?’ demanded their parent. “Why we stood ‘em up in the dining- room by the register to thaw them out.’’ “You succeeded adimirably,”’ was the curt reply. DROPPED DEAD! Suddenly Stricken Down by Heart Dis euse. “A sad and sadden death occurred to a well-known citizen on one of the lead- ing streets this morninz.” Nearly every large city paper con tuins daily some such heading. The number of deaths from heart failure is very large, but it is only when they occur in some public and sensational manner that general attention is drawn to them. Palpitation and fluttering of the heart are common complaints. With the heart itself there is nothing radically wrong. But the system is disorgan- ized, the kidneys and liver are out of order, and the stomach is not in con- dition to do its work porperly. Hee tween them all, they throw too much responsibility on the heart, and the letter is unable to stand the strain. A box of Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills at a cost of 25 cents will regulate the system, purify the blood and make a new person of every sickly man, womag or child. J., died a few days ago of nicotine poisoning. A simple and matter-of-fact announcement tats. will hardly stop long enough to read it, and yet to one who understands the hid- den meaning of the simple statement “nicotine poisoning,’’ it means a great deal. It means that through the carelessness of parents a child of tender years was al lowed to himself with one of the most deadly of all poisons —f poison classed with prussic arid be required to systematically poison cause of the minute doses kill men and animals. This deadly poison is contained in all kinds of tobacco. The poorer the grade of tobacco the higher the percentage of nico- tine. The finer grades of Havana contain about 2 per cent. of the poison, while the poor grades contain about double that quantity. There is little difference in the effect of tobacco, whether it is smoked, chewed or snuffel. As a matter of fact the man who chews a cigar absorbs far more nico- tine than one who chews ordinary chew- The latter is said to be much the admix- ing tobacco. less poisonous on account of ture of harmless vegetable matter. There is a case recorded where death followed the chewing of half a_ cigar. Adolescents are particularly susceptible to nicotine, as is evidenced from the fre- quent accounts of poisoning as a result of cigarette smoking. The cigarette ap- ars so mild and innocent that children take to it very kindly. The beginner does not asarule suffer the tortures which usually follow a ‘‘first cigar.’ The danger of posioning by is not so much from the smoke of the burning paper and tobacco; it lies prin- cipally in the moist and soggy end of the cigarette which is held between the lips. This end becomes saturated with saliva, and the tobacco parts with its poisonous elements, which is promptly absorbed by the tongue and the merbranes of the inouth and throat. When a boy is allowed %o smoke from one to three or more packages of cigar- ettes daily the injurious effect of the poison becomes apparent. He appears depressed, complains of nausea and loss of appetite, is nervous and irritable, and his heart acts in an irregular manner. It may even be enlarged or dilated as a result of the constant irritation pro- duced by the poison in his system. In the typical cigarette fiend one may find any one of the following conditions: Catarrh of the throat, nose and larnyx, usually of a chronic nature; catarrh of the stomach, palpitation of the heart, and various disturbances of vision. The latter are frequently of a very se i- ous character. It is said that clarity of vision is sometimes reduced to one-third of the normal, Medical authorities children should not be allowed to use tea, coffee, beer and wines. Tobacco, and particularly cigarettes, should be added to this list, not only added to, but placed at the head, for the weed is capable of inflicting more injury cigarettes are agreed that of a serious churacter than all of the other articles put together. Ups and Downs of the Opal. It is not ‘‘fashionable to be supersti- | tious about wearing opals. Ten years ago the woman who wore an opal was a brave woman indeed. To-day, experts admit, more opals are bought than any other precious stones except diamonds. It was Sir Walter Scott who helped, in ‘*Anne of Gierstein,’’ to arouse the fears of the superstitious concerning the wear- ing of that very beautiful stone, and it dealer in gems who fostered that fear very successfully, for other ends than those of romance. He canre to England years ago, we are told by a lady jeweler, to fili an order from one of the royal families in Germany—a wedding order, if I remember rightly. Opals were then high. He had printed the story that opals were unlucky, and spread the report diligently.
