The Whole Truth not Wanted by the Drummond Committee, THE RUSSELL ELECTION, Nothing Deflaite yet about West Prince, Orrawa, March Committee met obstacles to a 19.—Thbe Drummond yesterday with the first full investigation, when Greenshields refused to answer the ques- tions asked him chairman Lister and a majority of the committee supporting him in bis refusal. The House of Commons spent most of yesterday afternoon on Sir Loms Davies’ bill about steamship inspection and the evening session on Sir L. Joiy’s Weights and Measures Bill. Mr. Marcotte avain brought up the matter of Mr. Brunean’s resignation. Sir Wilfred Laurier asked for another day of grace as the law officers of the Crown had not yet finished looking into the matter. The Liberal candidate carried Russel] County yesterday by about 800. This result was not unexpected as both the On- tario and Dominion government used al! the resources possible to secure the result. Fer a fourth time Sir Wilfrid Laurier was asked, last night, whether the return- ing Officer had been appointed for West Prince and for the fourth time the Pre- mier explained that nothing had been dove. The thing is getting monotonous. Sir Wilfrid Laurier informed the Quebec delegates yesterday that there will be no railway bonus this season. ———$$—$$~<@>——- ~~ THE MAINE TROUBLE, Explosion not an Accident. — mn i Spain will be Asked for Reparation. Wasuincton, March 19.—It is under- | stood that the reports of the enquiry com- mission will state thatthe disaster to the Maine was not accidental. Jt is said that President McKinley bas proposed that the trial of the Maine incident be separately from the general Cuban Question and firat to ask Spain for whatever reparation may seem to be necessary in view of the details of the report. —_—_—_ ~~» ~~ GLADSTONE’S HEALTH, He will Return to Hawarder, Or ee Lonpex, Mareh 19.—In the absence of an improvement in Mr.Gledstones condi- tion it bas been settled that be shall retura to Hawarden from Bournemouth next week, Around Gladatove in Manitoba and at Plumas the farmers will probably be seed- ing in about two weeks’ time. Hanirax, March 17.— al Halifax indur- try thatis a crecit to the city is the Canad: and Newfoundiaad Company of which Ja:es Hall is the efficient manager. The stock paid up is $150,009 and it is exclusively in the bands of Halifax people—32 citizens. The company is evidently alive tothe impur- tance of the trade between this port, New= foundland, Liverpool! and Manchester, for in the near future they hope to add by purchase one if not two steamers to their fleet. This would enable them to give a regular fortnightly service to and from Halifax. They bave the assurance of importers, it is understood, that if this is done they will receive their undivided support. The steamers owned hy the company are the Ulunda and the Barce ona, besids which the company has chartered the ateamer Kilmorock, which leaves London for this port on the 26th, Atthe annual meeting of the company the directors were elected as follows: S. Brookfield, President; D. McPheraon, Vice- President ; Geoffrey Morrow, I. H. Mat- hers, William Barry. ae A OUESTION Str,—As an admirer of the Methodist Church would you allow me to ask a question througb your paper, and it is this Havethe ciass meetings in connection with the First Methodist Church come to an end orare they continued as usual? I am led to ask this because I understand noaunouncements are made from the pulpit on Sabbath days concerngpg these aswas usual. The powerful and pure gospel sermons this congregation listened toa snort time ago by the Rey. Howard Sprague are not wholly consistent with the flowery im- provements of whieh we have received in- timation, I fearthat with chancel arches and painted wiudows (mark it well ye Methodists of the olden time) the early glory and power of this church is depart- ing. Cucacr Gorr. SL LET THERE BE LIGHT. — Sirn,—Since enquiries are in order, would the Temperance Guardian endeavor to find out what meeting took place in the in the Executive Council Room in the Pro- vincis] Building laet week, and what pubs lic matter was “being attended to. There are many rumors rife reguarding this ex- treordicary gathering, and it will be well for the Temperance people to learn who authorised the use of the public building for the purpose referred to. TEMPERANCE. THE HAY TRADE, The value of a local market is strict- ly exemplified in Fredericton, where the ruling price of good hay is $2.00, A hay vealer ia St. John aseured the Sackville Post last week that in 30 years experience he had not seen such abso'u e dept: ssion in the business. Thrre are some 700 cattle from Oatario shipped weekly from that port and hay for them is landed along side the steamship at $750 per ton . A namber of eauses have contributed to this result. The lumber cut this year will be ore half what it was Jast winter, and there ia no market amongst lumber men. Hay raised in covotries along the border is shut out to United States markets by the tariff and it is reeking other outlets. The price of other feed is abnormally low and comes in competition with hay. Corn meal at $180 per bag almost unpre- cedented, Added to these causes, too many farmers have abandoned the old fashioned method of raising plenty of fat beeves for the ma:ket and have gone into shipping their hay. 4b Post concludes that the moral of all this is for our farmers to keep more stock and feed their hay. Cattle can be shipped from St.John to England, as well from Westmorland as from Ontario. The bus- iness has settled down to a basis now, and gives eertain returns at all events, which it did not a few years ago, when some of our operators plunged into (te business. _—— r+ > - Carter's for Wall Paper France is saubhine more territory than she is able to assimilate. With a popu- lation almost stationary, and fsancial burders constantly increasing in the effort to maintain an army equal to that of Ger- many with defences againstthe Triple Alliance, and a fleet which she hopes will be able to compete with that of Britain, her “power of expansion has long been overpassed. The continued peace, or rather armed truce, of Europe has» enabled her, perhaps in a measure compelled her, to find an outlet for the ambitious activities of ber soldiers in Afriea and elsewhere. A war would soon put a stop to these enterprises, and she would probably find her Awerican and Indian experiences of the eighteenth century repeated in Africa at the close of the nineteenth.
