In cold climates it. is not feasible to ad- mit outside air direct to the cellar, because lt would be cold in winter; the result would bo a int of frozen roots. The air must. enter the root cellar either through the barn or through the conduit built below frost line so that the temperature of tho air will be modlned iii passing through. There shoifld be a. shaft: in thc ceiling, opening above the barn or building ln which the cellar is located, just the same as the ventila- cing shaft in at King system of barn ventilation. The underground conduit spoken nf may be made of tl inch glazed tile lnld below frost. line and should extend from fifty to 'a hundred feet in this position so that, the air may get 'warmed up by the warmer soil be- fore lt reaches the entrance of the cellar. The opening into the outside air may he a vertical shaft to the desired depth below frost and then der the cellar opening into the door. Ifthscallar is fargo the 'tile should run the full length of the cellar with two or three openings. All openings both inside. and outside should be covered with a wire screen strong en- ough and one enough to keep out all all rodents nd the like. The tile to take care of any water that may condense in its interior. Such an arrangement will help to keep the cellar cool.
