Plant company, manu- shoes. running the largest factory in the world of women’s flne shoes, has reduced the working day of its 2000,employees to eight hours a day. Two years ago the Plant Company, with a pay roll of $1,000,000 per annum, decided to adopt the nine-hour system. They believed that, under proper conditions, their factory could produce as many shoes with the nine-hour system as with the usual 10-hour shoe factory day. By adopting special methods in keeping the employed, requiring promptness in attendance. the newdeparture was made asnccess in results, and recently it was decided to still further reduce the hours to eight instead of nine. This is the result of a perfect system in supervising every detail of an immense business. Today the Thomas G. Plant company enjoys the unique distinction of having voluntarily put into effect an eight-hour syswm without any change at . all being made in the wages of their week bands, which is one-fifth of their total force employed; and, further, the company claims that under conditions now enforc- ed, the piece work help can earn as much in the eight-hour day as they formerly earned in the ten-hour day. Quotation from a prominent labor om- oial: “Remember that that whether you work by the piece or work by the day, “Reducing the hours, increases the Day." There are separate entrances for male and female employees, with three eleva- tors to carry thalatter to their respective floors. Hat. and coat lockers are provided for all. Water boys are constantly in at- tendance to snpply fresh drinking water tothose who want it; Within the meter: sanitary arrange- # dlents are as perfect as possible and the 7, system of ventilation is perfect. During the months when the windows are necessar- ily kept closed there are 24 large ventila- ting fans kept running to exhaust the im- pure air, which is replaced by pure air from an immense blower." Under such conditions it is not sur~ prising to find efficiency, harmony and earnings per capita averaging higher thanany other and less advantageously planned and conducted establishments. It is the company’s belief that when a dispute is verging on-a" strike, the prin- cipals invalvezi are not competent to decide fairly which side is right-4t is only; the impartial third party that can do so. To carry this belief into eflect the Plant company has bound itself by asigned ‘”statement with each employee, whereby any grievaece not :satuac- strum & to. insurance Agents. 0 Pare, i Representing the leading Bri Companies 'f Isaak. tutti our great Specialities .isrths. reason 0 reason is plai meat on P.
