In an article too long to be repro- duced in our short columns the Lon- don Times of recent- date dealt with the Congress on Tuberculosis held at Berlin. The Times shows the vast importance attached to the deliber- ations of the Congress by the scienti- fic world, because of the awful de- structiveness of this form of disease and the possibility of restricting its rav- ages by preventive measures. The Queen thought fit to communicate to the Congress her prayer that God would bless their noble efforts. Count Posadowsky, who opened the pro- ceedings- in the name of Emperor William, expressed the belief that the Tuberculosis Congress was compar- able in importance to the Peace Con- ference at the Hague, and said that the two events would he remembered lin future ages as indicative 'of the spirit of our time. _ “The resemblance,” says the Times; "‘is not fanciful or' far-fetched. The ravages of war are not more terrible than those caused by If a _large part of the were .of the past might have been averted by the ex- ercise of good sense and good temper, note. few of themnlndies of mankind might be controlled and deprived of their -virulence by science. If the waste of blood and treasure causedby swollen armaments is an incubus on lindustry, so also is the waste, equally d'eplorable, which is the result of dis- eases. * For one person who loses his life in battle scores die of diseases which science declares can be eradi- cated or much diminished in ma- lignity.” l The article we are- following pro- ceeds to show from reliable authori- ties that the number of deaths from tuberculosis and lung diseases is 180. 320 per annum in the United King- dom and 960.000 yearly in Russia, or at the rate of 4.508 per million inhabitants in the one case, and 8.000 per million in the other. Alarming as are these figures the case becomes more appalling when it is remembered that the dis- ease finds its victims chiedy among those who ought to be in the vigor of life. Thus in England no fewer than 26.6 per cent of the total deaths be- tween the ages of 15 and 35 are as- cribable to tubercnlai' disease. And in Russia and other European conn tries it is proportionately worse. “The health of nations, concludes the Times,“in the long lun is the wealth of nations. Every invalid is a non- eifective in the ranks of industry, to be supported by _the able-bodied. Every one who dies prematurely from tuberculosis or any other malady is, to put it ineconomical._ so much capital wasted. Disease occa- sions ,the heaviest naitional charge -which haste be paid.
