Orrawa, June 4. with the revision of veters’ lists for 1892, and to legalize certain lists which were not returned within the prescribed time. The bill was read a second time. In answer to Mr. Mills, of Annapolis, ment was aware that apples are being ex- ported from Oanada in barrels of different sizes, and not in compliance with Section 18 of the Weights and Measures Act, to the injury of certain portions of the Dominion, the apple trade of which complies with the Act. The present law forbids apples being exported exe pt in certain barrels. It is the intention to put the apples in a sche- dule of articles subject to inspection, and it will be the duty of inspectors to see that barrels are in accordance with the Act. An Unsatisfactory Appointment Sr. Jonny, June 4. The deadlock over the appointment by the Provincial Government of a Judge of Probate for St. John, was broken yester- day by the appointment of OC. N. Skinner, M.P. It sppears that Mr. Skinner may hold the position and sit in Parliament. The appointment disgusts the stalwart grits of St. John, all of whom supported the Blair Government, while all are politi- cal opponents of Mr. Skinner. Protecctors of the Fisheries. Hatirax, June 4. Perkins, of San Francisco, Cal., is visiting relatives and friends on the Island. Mr. Perkins, who is a brother of Mr. Fred. Perkins, of the well known dry goods firm of Perkins & Sterns, left the Island about eighteen years ago. We understand that Mr. Walter P. Doull, who recently resigned his position as superin- tendent of the Full Electric Company, has taken charge of that establishment for another mouth. The Superintendent of Education returned last evening from Summerside, where he was examining the Davies School, He reports the school in excellent condition. Mr. Geo. W. Gardiner, wife and two children, were among the passengers in the western train last evening. Mrs. (Gardiner and children had been spending the winter with relatives in Albuquerque, N. M., and were met in St. John on their way home, by Mr. Gardiner. A Prosperous Inpustry.—At the an- nual meeting of the Amherst Boot and Shoe Factory a few daysago the directorate re- ported a very satisfactory ysar’s business— almost a duplicate of that of last year. The sales of the year were $339,800; the amount psid in wages and salaries $54,623 ; average number of hands employed 200. After writing off for bad debts and depreciation in machinery, and adding a snug sum to rest account, the usual satisfactory dividend was declared. The old board of directors were re-elected.
