his sister, Mi's. Bruce Constable of
this City,
Somewhere in France,
June 2-ith, 1915.
Dear Sister:-
l now sit down to answer your
most kind and welcome letter which
came to liund a short time ago. I
am glad to hear that you are well as
it leaves me in the best of health at
present.
Well we are back about five miles
from the front now. We are back
for a rest, but we expect to go up ai-
gaiii tomorrow night.
W-,e had it pretty warm up there
the last time, we were iii the thick-
est of Artillery, maxim and rifle (Ire,
but our corp came out without any
casualties. But our poor (Iaiiadiaii
boys in the trenches siiffered severe-
ly i'roin the enemies munitions.
We were kept pretty busy getting
the wounded out and carrying them
away. Well you asked me to tell you
something about the war and how it
was going.
We are not allowed to tell you
much about it, as our letters have to
be censored by our officers.
Our part of the work is to look
after the wounded. as you know I ani
in u. field ambulance.
A field ambulance has two divis-
,ioiis, bearer division and a tent div-
isioii. Tile bearer division has to go
out and collect. the wounded and
send them back to tho tent division,
where their wouiids gel dressed and
treated iii n civilized manner.
We see some cruel sights. There
is some things I would love for you
to see; and there are others I hope
you will never see.
There is a big battle going on up
there now, and I ani just as well
pleased we are not in it. For it is not
much like a street fight ur ii. tiuarrcl
on a corner. It makes you think ol'
your happy homo wlicn you get into
lt. But we never think of danger or
death.
The Island boys iii this unit are
flue. There are only seven of us. Wio
are the happy boys from the old
“number nine." We are always intp-
py, even lu the thickest of it we are
coiiteiitetl. Any old place we hang oui'
hat is home sweet home to us even
if it is liuiig on a tree.

RUSSIAN RETREAT
IN POLAND
A Russian official of high standing,
at present in the United States for
his government, speaking of the ina-
bility, so far shown, by the Czar’s for-
ces to halt the onward sweep of the
Teutonic allies has disclosed a story,
already vaguely hinted at. of German
treachery whereby at the outset of
the war Russia"s muiiitlon factories
were put out of operation, Russia, this
diplomat says, is still in the greatest
need of war supplies. Shipments in
anything like extensive voluine of guns
and ammunition of all sorts have just
begun going by way of Pacific Coast
ports to Vladivostok, the easternniost
port of Siberia, and thence by rail over
the Trans-Siberian railway.
,The most reliable information is that
it will .require three months ol’ steady
shipment to equip the Russian forces
opposing the Austro-German armies
in Poland and Galicia in a satisfactory
manner. The almost hysterical dem-
ands that have come from the Russian
government for the speedy forward-
ing of guns and ammunition evidence
a most acute need for them.
There has been a great deal of con-
jecture as to the cause for the lack
of weapons and ammunition adequate
properly to equip the Russian army. _
The real reason probably has nev-
er been told. Russia, before the be-
ginning of the war, was known not\
only to have maintained factories for
the manufacture of guns and ammun-
ition for ordinary needs but to have
had a reserve supply sufficient to pr-
vent it from being taken by surprise
in the event oi' war. The most import-
ant factorfes capable of turning out
war materials were in the neighbor-
hood of Petrograd, Moscowl, Nihii-
Novgorod, Tiflis, Odessa and Sebast-
opoh
During the forty-eight hours preced-
ing and following the declaration of
war by Germany against Russia these
plants were put out of business by in-
cendiary fires and dynamite explos-
ions. The Russians always have felt
justified in crediting the destruction
of their munitions plants at this cr-
itical period in their history to the
work of German spies or through the
use of German money.
During the tuinult that followed the
declaration of a state of war between
Germany and Russia the outside world
knew nothing of the devastation wr-
ought to Russian arms by its enemy,
although it now developes that some
men who were caught rediiaiided
were shot or hanged.

LONDON, Aug, 1.-An inquest was
held Saturday on the body oi' Private
Frederick Malcolm Douglas, aged 20,
of Kingston. N. ll. Douglas, a mem-
ber ot’ the (ith Mounted Rifles, was
killed by lightning the day after his
arrival from Canada. Privates Jas.
Westwater and Chas. Johnson, of the
some Battalion, had a narrow escape.
An inquest _wus also held in the case
of Private Jos. Victor Harvey. aged
24, of Murray Bay, a. member of the
22nd Battalion. Ile was fuiind shot in
his lint with his rifle at his sidc. A
verdict of accidental death was found
in both cases.
LONDON, July 30.-- The following
