On a muddy MacAdam Field both teams put on a very good show...the Panthers fell too far back in the first half (1—19) to have a very good chance to win but an 8 point loss would have brought the Panthers first place under the sam- ewhat complicated formula that has been made necess- ary by the possibility of a three way tie. As we me— nded our muddy way for a bracer at the half some thought that our playoff chances seemed in jeopardy However, our's is a "Sec- ond—Half" team and with a few minutes to go in the ’last quarter we seemed to be in good scoring posit— ion with the margin closed to 15-25. Then a most dis— heartening series of plays put our chances out of re- ach. ' These IF'S remind us of a story our mother used to tell about two tramps. ‘ One of them found an old frying pan and remarked to his companion, "You know, if we had a fire and if we had some ham we could have some ham and eggs.....if we had some eggs!" We hope that, as you read this. this, the main topic of campus conversation wi— ll be our impending Atlan- tis Bowl game........;.. Lest a good turn goes un- heeded, we, along with the Student Union, wish to acf knowledge to the St. Mary' Athletic Dept., and part— icularly to R.W. Clements, our thanks for the though- tfulness they exhibited when they sent us 200 res- erved seat tickets, (value $2.50) for the center gra- ndstand section right behe ind our beloved Panther bench. These they let us have for only $1. each wh— ich was the same price th- ey charged their own stud- ents. More than this what could they do?...one shou- ld realize that this game was not staged by the team, but, being a playoff, by the league itself and a charge was stipulated. we wish to assure S.M.Uo that‘ no matter how much we want to beat them, this courte— sy is greatly appreciated._ 0) U.P.E.Io73—65. c oCoMoRo65L55 (Basketball) Like the hockey team our, basketball team is under— going a rebuilding and se- em to improve with every routing. Emphasis has shif— ted to P.E.I. boys (...not that foreigners aren't we— lcome!) Games with C.M.R. showed we had a 10 point lead at the half in the lst game only to lose it and, in the second game trailed by thirteen but rallied we— ll to win by 10. From conversation with a C.M.R._player, we learn L al. They have teams play— ing hockey, basketball, water polo, soccer and so- me other minor sports. With the “second chance" 'S.M.U. game just ahead at the time of writing, it is probably a good time to state we were quite disap- pointed in our boys last week. After all their win— ning games they paid a sh- ort visit to their fans in the Panther Lounge.t:and received a warm welcome... last Saturday, after their first loss they failed to appear. While we appreciate the fact that they may ha— ve felt a bit low we know their followers would have 'liked tO'shOW we still th- ink they are the greatest and have no reason to wall in any other way than wit“ their heads held high.... they have given us the be— st football we have ever seen at U.P.E.I. and we want them to know that, in our opinion, they haven't been beaten yet.....their -opponents just happened to score more pointsllllllll U.P.E.I. l3-ll...C.M.R. 2- (Hockey) Our Panther hockey team looks better every start and we are anxious to see them in the action that RE ALLY counts...the M.I.H.L. The C.M.R. boys skated we- ll and had excellent goal— keeping but just did not have the experience to st- ay in contention with the Panthers. The two games I were a good workout for our boys and we feel we wi 11 be improving with everL xy outing and look for an interesting season with our young team putting on a big rally after Xmas br— eak. Saturday night's game with Mt. A. will be the first we have missed in' many years and we hope the» game is delayed so that we can get in for the third period.....how about a p0+ wer failure??? H
