OE LRA TOTES © TPT EELS EO DEATH OF ‘TIA. LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR. @m Donatp Camrnerrt is dead! The public, as well as His Exceilency’s fumi- iy, have for sowe..mionths been prepared for this event, anc must -have received «ts announcement ay by no means start- Laing. Whilst the community readily sympa- thises with his family in their bereave- ment, we think there are few who can aincerely regard his Ivxcellency’s remo- icare to announce that he was a member of tle great Reform Club of London, lercise his high authority for the benefit ‘of all classes, and not for that of a few. | | The premature dissolution of the Par- liament elected in 1846, wherein the oli- ‘garchy, by two unconstitutional acts, ac- quired their wonted ascendancy, strength- ened, rather than repressed, the presump- tion, that his Excellency was desirous of eliciting the real opinions of his fellow subjects, and of acting in accordance with them. It may be remembered by cur readers that we regarded that dissolution asa bright omen in his Excellency’s career, for we thought that if he were actuated by a desire to serve the interests of the oligarchy, he would have sufler- ed that Parliament which served their ‘urn so submissively and well, to linger out the Jegal term of its ex- istence. Subsequent events, howe- ver, plainly indicated, that Sir Donald respecting the temper of the country, and was blindly induced to believe, that bad and corrupt, and tyrannical as the old Assembly was, a new one could be created infinitely worse ; or, in other words, that ina new Assembly a majo- rity would be found ready to. strangle Responsible Government ifever again its ery should be heard, and continue to pamper with official pap the bastard which had so Jong usurped its place. ‘The singularly crooked policy pursued by his Excellency after the atsembling of the New House in March last, presents two many topics for consideration to be reviewed at the present moment. We val from amongst us as a great public) oifamity. There are few who did nat | to see him out of the Government—| none, we think, who wished to see him| jaid in the grave. Of Sir Donaid Campbeil’s private and omestic virtues we shall say nothing, because we know little in reference to’ them, But of bis merits as a public man} —ofhis capacity for governing a colony of freemeu— we do know something from the experience of the three last years of his life. We have lately given our opi- sion of lis public conduct svinilst he held the Goverament of this Island, and we aee no reason now why we should reverse Ahat opinion, With less love of power for the mere @ake of. its. enjoyment—-less _ de- wire to. be thought great without passes- singsny of the distinctive qualities of greattiess— less cunning, and finesse, and Misingenuousness, Sir Donald Campbell might have been an eminently popular sad honoured representative of his So- vereign. No man ever came to the chief magis- tracy under more favourable auspices. The peoplehad become heart-sick of an @ligarchy who moulded previous gover- wors to their will—dispensing the patro- nage of the Crown, at. their dictation, frowning down enquiry into official pecu- ‘ation, and‘repressing the hopes and the ‘energies of the honoarably ambitious be- -yond the pale of the favoured class, who might aspire to make their talents useful from Government Honse for interment, must leave the subject, therefore with the intention of returning to it on Saturday - next, when we shall endeavour to bring our analysis of his late Excellency’s offi- cial character to a close, Yesterday at 2 o’clock, the morta! re- mains of Hie Excellency were removed in the following order :— The Sons of Temperance—preceded by their Band.
