The UPEI SUN,'Ihursday,Feb.16,l978,page 3 and bohemian life—styl e, delighted, yet unsettled his contemporaries in Eng- land at the turn of the Century. Mazumdar had a similar effect on his audience at the Steel Re- cital Hall, ‘ About 30 people attended "Oscar Renenbered;" a 'por— trait of Wilde, Concieved and portrayed by Mazundar’.‘ To win over a small aude ience that has been waiting 45 minutes for the curtain to rise, is demanding for». any actor. Mazmndar did .it single-handedly. The one man Show is a biographical account of the Irish Playwright and Poet, related by his lover: Lord .lfred Douglas. Tne sexual overtones led to lapses of sensationalism, distracting, but necessary, de created nothing else, he did create a sensation. After a spectacular trial that outraged English soc— iety, and the resulting two year' prison term, he wrote: "...'I let myself be led into spells of sense- less and sensual ease. . . . Tired/poi? being atthe hei-- ghts, “I deliberately went : VDEPTS. It appears as if Mexrorial Hall will be I lying idle for a while. To Experience Mazurrdar's performance is to experi- ence the heights and the depths of what; for Wilde turned out to be a tragic search. The life of the flamboy oyant writer has as much drama as any of his plays. .Hewasattl'epeakofa' phenomenal career when at— cussed of honesexuality by Lord Alfred's father: The Marquis of Queensbury. Wilde rashly filed a counter suite, but --the accusations were true—— and he found himself in prison. lord Alfred remained ‘loyal during the trial. Like the ghostly dancers in"'1he Harlot's House;" " They took each other by file hand/ And danced a stately saraban . " , The trial was the scan- dal of the Century. There is one problem with Mazumdar's version of the proceedings. We hear to much of, Lord Alfred, and not enough of Wilde. We get only a small taste of the wit and confidence with which Wilde uneffect— ively defended himself. sate concern over the fact V that there is at present no space for the sumer hostel. He said that this concern has been expressed ~ to him before and the problem is being looked into. It appears that sate sort of clarification , is needed for last week's lead story entitled "Education Faculty ' Shafted" . This reporter, in a meeting with Mr. Clough, JPEI canptroller, was able to find sate of the answers raised in last week's article: First of all, the Space Allocation Committee is a Presidential appointed ccmnittee, not a Senate sub-carmittee. The committee has recently ‘diang’ed. Mr. Clough ‘ stated that the new Irrenbers are Gerry Arsenault (Education E’aCulty) ; Don Coles (Director of Physical Plant) ; Jim McDougal (Science)! 'Ied Webster (Arts) and Eranoes Piercy (Student) . . Mr. Clough went on to ' (space in Menorial. Once in prison, Wilde rejects his intimate fre- ind—who is shattered: ' "’men suddenly the tune went false/ The dancers wearied of the waltz." During the show, the details of this intimate relationship I develOped dramatically, is effective tive; biased, but nesc— assary, to cmvey to a modern audience "the revul— ticn the English people had for the writer after the scandal. Again, we see to much of lord Alfred's toment . and not enough of Wilde's. Lord Alfred retrained ever theblind lover. Even the disclosure that Wilde had been procurring the services of young boys did not alter his affections. In spite of this con~ centraticn on Lord Alfred, a strong impression of' Wilde is developed, which is striking, beCause he never really appears. However, with so much time spent on lord Alfred, the audience recieved only a taste of theman who cham— pioned an aethetic movement, who championed the creed, " Art for art's sake," and died lonely and rejected. The sexually explicit overtones of the production had impact, and"healthy" assertations of virility V were heard after the show. - In the end, it would have been interesting to discover to a greater de- gree , what it was Wilde was hiding with his "jewel— led" words. Mazumdar, a antreal actor and Playwright. returns to PEI, for anot— ther perfcmance of the show March 2nd, at the MacKen— zie Building, Charlotte- town. . RMEMORIAL say that the Administration are not dragging their feet. Instead, he said, it has been the fault of the various faculties for not submitting their proposals earlier. 'Ib date there are four departnents applying for 'Ihese are: 10 Modern languages 2) Math 3) English and 4) Education. Mr. Clough applied to the MPHEC last Spring requesting funds for possible renovations. He applied for "a fairly substantial sum," a number of dollars per square foot.
