Men’s Basketball Team Have a Bit of Tough Luck By Darrell Cole, Sports Editor The UPEI Men’s Basket- ball team had a tough week- end which saw them lose two heartbreaking games against arch-rival Acadia and St. Mary’s. Even though the Panthers lost they still played solid basketball. On Saturday the Pan- thers were in Wolfville, Nova Scotia to play the’ Acadia Axemen. The game was a good fast-paced game as nei- ther team was able to build a large lead in the early going. The Panthers eventually built up a seven point lead before the end of the first half only to see Acadia chip away at it and only trail by one at halftime 45—44. The teams came out of the dressing rooms flying for the second half trading bas- kets for about the first ten minutes. Then the wall be- gan to crumble for the Pan- thers as the Axemen ran offa 12—4 string to grab the lead which’ they would not relin- quish. The Panthers attempted a comeback and pulled within two points on Peter Gordon’s two success- ful foul shots in the closing seconds but that’s as close as they got losing 84-80. Scorers for the Panthers were: Gordon 23; Ruiz 13; MacSwiggan 16; Roberts 10; Dunn 6; Adams 6; Allen 4; On Sunday the Panthers travelled to Halifax to play. the St.Mary’s Huskies in their new stadium, “The Tower”. The first half was an exciting have with tight zone defenses from both teams and SMU?s Dave Smith hit- ting long bombs from three point territory. The tone was set for the second half when Roberts picked up a foul and on Lady Basketball the ensuing possession Smith hit for another three point bomb. To make things worse the Panthers lost the use of Saturday’s top scorer Pe- ter Gordon who injured his knee. The Panthers had some trouble on offense Sunday in the second half as they only managed nineteen points. When the game ended the Panthers came up short los- ing 60-51..
