The price is said to be £l,795,0ll), which is considerably within the estimated cost of $10,000,000. The Britain are the parties immediately inter- ested, and they will pay for it in some pro portion to the interests involved and their respective abilities to contribute. The undertaking is one of great interest to Canada and the Empire. It is of especial interest tc Canada as it will give direct cable connection between the two principal outlying colonies, where now we are dependent upon a very roundabout cable route from Australia to England and thence across the Atlantic. It will also be of great advantage and security to both Australia and the United Kingdom by furnishing a line oi electrical com- munication which touches only Upon British soil. The cable when laid will r.in in an almost straight south~westvvar~d direction from Vancouver to the Fanning Islands and thence in the same direction to the Fejee Islands. From here the main line will continue in the same direction to the mainland of Australia, while a branch cable will run due south to New Zealand. The new cable will have a further sig- nificance in that it will complete the cable circuit of the world, so that the i/'oughts of men may realize the prophecy oi Puck and "put a girdle round the world in (less than) forty minutes.” What the cable will do in binding the British Empire together, in facilitating the move- ments of fleets and armies, in contributing to imperial defence and security, in pro- moting the spread of commerce and the interchange of thought can be better imagined than described at present. It is obvious, however, that the Pacific cable has become a necessity of the age, ’and the letting of the contract for its con- struction is one of the important events of the closing century. The people of the districts west of North River apparently take a deep interest in the more convenient route. They realise that when once the new bridge is constructed ageneration to come, and perhaps fora century the great improvement on which they have set their minds. Meetings have been held at North River and at Cornwall, and another meeting will be held at New Haven to-night in the interestof the proposed change. With a bridge across the North River st Brighton Road we should have a. direct carriage _way from Crapaud through Hampton, De Sable.New Haven, Cornwall and North River to the City. The populous districts of Bedeque, Tryon, Carleton, Augustine Coxe, Cape Traverse and Argyle Shore would all, together with Charlottetown, prodt by the proposed improvement. , _ A GREAT BUILDER.-The' D. & L.
