The convention was called to order by LL Jenkins, Esq., convener, who explained that they had met to nominate candidates to contest the district at the forthcoming election in the interests of the Opposition. Upen motion, Mr Ernest Harris was appointed secretary, and a nominating committee was struck as follows: Thomas Dovle, hcairman: William Rodd, Joseph Wise, Dugald Currie, Thomas Tremere, George Sherren, Thomas Oxenham, Angus N McLeod,Thomas Cass and Dr R Macneill. While the committee were deliber- ating the meeting was addressed by Mr A C Shaw who moved the fol- lowing resolution : the been under and we hereby desire to place on {election laws of the Province where- by such conduct shallin future be impracticable as well as all villain- ous ‘‘machine’’ acts. It was moved by Mr Arthur Wright, seconded by Mr A C Shaw, and carried unanimously : Resolved, That we deplore and condemn the system of keeping the accounts of the Prov ince whereby during the last session of our local Parliament it was proved the alleged sinking fund to pay our debentures was’ a falsified concern and a myth,and no such fund was in existence as_ pro vided for by law but the money de posited on callin the Merchants’ Bank of Halifax; suchconduct de- mands that Mr Farquharson’s gov- ernment be deprived of power, for if they are false in one matter they are false in all, and further revela tions are yet in store for the peo pie. McNeill seconded by Mr. Stephen Coles and unanimously adopted : Resolved, That the taxes now levied by the present government are unduly high upon town and country and betore any more taxes are levied we demand a rigid investi- gation into every branch of the public service, the records of which shall be open for public examination fo- the information of the public whereby the names of debenture holders and the names of assessable income taxpayers shall be known as well as any other matter in connec- tion with the public service shall be as accessible to the public as a search now made in the Registry record our demand for the strictest | econoray in the administration of the government of P. The nomination was then accepted by Messrs. Mellish and Gallant,both of whom addressed the meeting.
