TWO MILLION BRITlSlIEB-S TAKE UP HIKING LONDON, June 25.—(U.P.)—Hik- ers in England now number more than 2,000,000, according to a re- cent estimate by J. E. Walsh, editor of ‘The Hiker and Camper." The steady increase in the num- ber of hikers is seen by Walsh as conditions,’ the workers fleeing to the country during the week-end to escape the noise of the city. ‘The popularity of hiking, it 1a said, also has brought a better un- derstanding between the villager and the city worker. flinsrdh Llolmont for llllfoses- MR. June 25. -- (UP)- Chinas unemployment problem is. other country today, according to semi-omcial statistics in several North China cities. A survey of Tientsin, the port of Peiping, shows that 400,000 per- sons are unemployed out of a total population of 1,450,000. Similar fig- ures for Peiping itidicate that more than 200,000 are unemployed here in a population of about a rntliion. Superficial surveys in other North [China cities indicate that at least one-fifth of the population is un- employed. The slump in silver ex- change, and the world-wide depres- , sion, are cited as the principal ' causes. Chinese economists estimate that men and women entirely out of work in Chinh today, or those work- ing for less than a living wage, may ttoal 50,000,000, out of a population of 45090090. In some provinces they declare it is possible that half the population is without work. Peiping is better off than most Chinese cities, because 100,000 hand- icraft workers are kept employed making articles for export. There are many observers who have watched them come and g0 in Hollywood who are willing to bet that the girl who rates the title as Clara's successor will last about a. year on the screen. A year if she 1s lucky. Clara left the screen suddenly one day in May after she collapsed on a set. Rumors flew that she had attempted suicide. It was said, she flew into a violent temper and struck her director on the head with a mirror before she was subdued. The rumors were denied and Miss Bow went to a Glendale sani- tarium. It was said that worries over a number of "bad breaks’ caused her collapse. The alleged love balm to the wife of a young Texas doctor, the Cal-Neva $13,000 gambling adventure, the Daisy De Voe trial and the appearance of a "love life" series in a Los Angeles tabloid were mentioned as contrib- uting causes. When the studio announced, af- ter several weeks, that Clara was released from her contract, the star said she was very happy. “Now I can get well,’ sne said. "I worried constantly because I was unable to fulfill the terms oi my contract." In Hollywood at the time were several young girls of recognized movie talent. Their business rcp- resentatives and friends were cult-k to quash suggestions that one of them might be the second Clara. Memories mu are fresh in Holly- wood of ill luck which seemed to come to second Wally Reids, second Rudolph Valentines,- imitators of Charlie Chaplin, or of the late Lvtl Chaney. It is recognized that pretty little Sally Starr did much better in. the films before someone discovered she looked a bit like Clara Bow. Sally herself said that she liked Clara and admired Miss Bow‘s work, but had no desire to be known for the talents of other than Sally Starr. That helped a little. Marlene Dietrich and her back- ers spent thousands of dollars and great energy to impress fans with the fact that Miss Dietrich and Greta Garbo were separate and dis- tinct artists. Paramount studios uncovered two young women to supplant Miss Bow in pictures interrupted by the ill health of the star. The fortunate actresses were Sylvia Sidney and Peggy Shannon. If you want to cause a mild earthquake around Paramount just go up to the head oflice and ask M. P. Schulberg if the studio plans to bill either of the potential stars as a “Second Clara Bow." ‘Miss Bow made millions for Para- mount, but Schulbergs answer will be a decided “No,“ and he may ring for the studio p-liceman. If you tarry a. while you may hear Schul- berg shout: "There is only one Clara Bow in the world.“ MlnnrsPs Linlsnont fur Plmples. IITHE BIG PROVINCIAL E_X— HIBITION of i931 commences Mon day. It has been a serious vegetable pest in Northern Europe for a. long period, and has been known in- Eastern Canada for nearly half a century. It is spreading slowly west and south and in Canada has reached the Lake Superior region. It is one of the most difficult of soil-in-habiting insects to control and had been the subject of study on two continents for years. There are two genera- tions of these flies each ,year and injury to the carrot crop is caused by the maggots from the eggs laid by these flies. which bore into the young carrot early 1n June and again into the more mature root early in October. Two methods of control are found useful. First the cultural method of late planting so that seedlings do not appear above ground before" June 10, and of early harvesting, before September 15. The second method of control is the application of corrosive sublimate as an insecticide applied at the time of egg laying in the life cycle of the fly. The solution used is one ounce to ten gallons of water.’ This mix- ture is used to thoroughly saturate the soil around the young seedlings.
