McALeynN. Ch’town, Aug. 28, 1883. ——— a > me Arabi Pasha Interviewed. HIS LIFE IN CEYLON—RESIGNED TO HIS CAPTIVITY AND STUDYING ENGLISH. L’Evenement of Paris publishes the account of aninterview of oneof its correspondents withArabi Pasha. After giving description of the outside of the retty cottage inhabited by Arabi, and et tohim by arich English merchant of Colombo, who had placed an inter- peter at the disposal of the interviewer, the latter continues: —*T arrived at nine o’clock at Arabi’s. My card was taken immediately bya servant, but I was obliged to wait for about twenty minutes before I could see the Pacha. Overpowered by the heat I am sipping my third brandy and soda, when, drag- ging himself along, my cardin one hand, Arabi appears, half asleep yet, but emoking a Levantine cigar. The Arabian interpreter whom I have brought conveys my greetings and tells him that, belonging to the French prees, I could not leave Ceylon without wait- ing upon the valiant soldier who had so courageously fought in defence of Egyptian nationality. While seem- ingly flattered by the interested com- pliment Arabi (ciis me that he makes po merit of his st: uggle for the freedom ot Egypt that he was but the instrument of Allah. He adds that if fate con- demos him toexile he himself is re- signed todo it in the firm hope that Egypt is marching toward a period of prosperity and liberty that will make her forget the bloody days through which she has just passed.’ To the interviewers remark that England might make Egypt prosperous and perhaps happy; buat never free, Arabi observed. “Events do but obey the law of fatality. God has willed it that English should become our masters. He has willed it for the welfare of the Egyptian people. Your pen will con- vey .my words very fair, As such please to say that by now I have learn- ed to respect the Ehglish as the best friends of Egypt. Asyou know, per- haps, I am learning English ; it is my favorite occupation; and my most ar- dent wish is toebtain of the British Government the authorization te ge to London to lay at Queen Victoria's feet the assurance of mydevotion.” M. Paulham then asked if Arabi ever ex- pected tosee Egypt again. It would assuredly be a great joy, but if my pre- sence there would entail fresh compli- cations I would by far prefer the sacrifice of my most ardent wish to the good of my country. Abdel-Kader,tho Emir who so loyally served France after having so courageously combated her, has just died at Damascus, far from the Algeria he loved so well.
