It is underg ing changes as it approaches the sun and can be seen by the naked eye early in the evening, Prof. Swift, in an interview, asserts that the red sunsets are due to extraneous matter which has come into our atmosphere and which reflecta the raysof the sun. C.—C, Murley. —_—-+--_~»>—-- - Work is about to be commenced on_ the new Oddfellow’s Hall in the commodious brick building owned by W. E. Dawson, Esq., on the corner of Kent and Great George Streets. The main entrance will be on Great George Street sufficiently wide to admit of four abreast. The Lodge Room proper will be forty-eight feet long by twenty seven feet wide, the ceiling being twelve feet in height. The paraphernalia room is eighteen by four- teen feet, and the encampment room eighteen and a half by fourteen feet. The reception room is thirteen feet wide by about eighteen feet long. The ante room is fifteen by ten feet. The approaches to the room are to be finished in the most workmanlike manner, while the finish and equipments of the Lodge Room, ante rooms, &c., will be second to none in the Maritime Provinces or perhaps in Canada. The new room which is to be jointly occupied by ~t. Lawrence and Wildey Lodges and Port la Joie Encampment, will be ready for use on the 'st day of July next. It is expected that Grand Master Cushing and officers of the Grand Lodge will be present to assist at the ceremony of dedication. Paris, Jan. 7. -Tonino, the Chamberlain of the Khedive of Egypt, and Master of Ceremonies in the Kgyptian household, has arrived here, charged with a mission to Premeir Ferry and the French Cabinet, to ask that France shall demand of England that the latter power shall either annex or depart from Egypt. Lonvon, Jan. 7. The Khedive in defending his position in an interview with the Cairo correspondent of the Times showed that he was not per- sonally prepared to yiald to the demands of the English Note. He repudiated the re- portthat he designed to abdicate. He believed that if the Ministry of Cherif Pacha should retire, their successors would be easily found. Rebels Victorious. Cairo, Jan. 7. Official advices received yesterday from the Soudan put a different light upon the recent affair at Gezierah, which has been reported asa victory for the Bashi Bazouks, garrisoning that place. It transpires that the garvison was defeated by the Rebels and that the latter are now marching in force upon Berber. The Egyptian Cabinet is in Session at the residence of Cherif Pacha, the Prine Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs) The Khedive is not present. The Ministers persist in their determination to resign, and will tender their resignation of their portfolios to the Khedive to-day or to- morrow. Bravery Rewarded. Orrawa, Jan. 9. At Antigonish eels and smelts are caught throngh the ice and shipped off frozen to soston. At Bras @’Or Lake large quantities of codfish and herring are now being taken, the codfish by hook and line and the herring by nets under the ice. The codfish are drawn home on sleds, piled up like cord- wood. In one of the interior settlements of Cape Breton is a Highland family who have a bagpipes that sounded the notes of war on the battlefield of Culloden. They esteem the pipes very highly, J. A.
