i Se . The Silver yea A fisherman sat at his door one day, Watching the clouds that, heavy and grey, Obscured the suplight’s shining ; And he said to Bright Zyes at his Knee, ‘Look yonder out in the west and see The cloud with a silver lining.’ I think when our skies are cold and grey, And we vainly seek to find the way, Somewhere the light is shining, If we bravely resolve to do our part, And bear our grief with a patient heart, And free from all repining. We shall be led to a higher way, To a better work than we do to-day, And find love's sunlight shining ; For truth of spirit and strength of soul Will make the darkest cloud uuroll And show its silver lining. —Helen Keith, ° 2:<ef e——— The Elder Got Ahead. Old Potiphas Bledsoe. of the southern Tier, is an authority on horses and ministers, and this is one of his — riences: “I never knowed Deacon Expeters to git beat but onct in my life, and that was dove by Elder Smiles, who worked the Tioga circuit down in Pennsylvany. This ere Expeters had a bay filly that Elder Smiles wanted, an’ he offered Expeters a big brown gelding which ‘ud weigh about twelve nundred, even up for “the filly. You see the elder wanted that filly mighty bad to ride on his circut. But this ere Fxpeters asked the elder $14 boot money, an’ the elder hemmed an’ hawed ’round considerably an’ weat off finaily,an’ there warant no trade that day. Butin about a week arter this ere Expeters dropped in on the elder in & careless way like, an’ the question of the hoss trade cum up, and this ere Expeters says: « «Wall, elder, I’ve bin athinkin’ con- siderable about what we said the last time we talked hoss, an’ the more I thought the more the Lord seemed to be waiserin’ in my ear: Let the elder have the filly ; let the elder have the filly.” The Lord seemed to kinder put itto mein the light of a duty I owed to the canse, an’ so, elder, if you say so, the filiy’s your’s an’ Vil take the geld ing. “<«Wall,’ says the elder, ‘if what you say is true, it would rather look like my duty totake the filly, considerin’ all the circumstances, an’ you don’t know how grateful I am to you,Brother Expeters, an’ if you say trade its a trade.’ “ ‘All right,’ said this ere Expeters, an’ they shook hands on it. ** ‘I guess,’ says the elder, “I'll go over and git the filly now. ? “ ‘That'll be all right,’ says this ere Expeters, an’ these two Christians went up to Expeters’ paster, an’ when they got tothe bars they found the filly lying there as dead as a kit of pick whitefish. The elder looked at they nily an’ then he looked at Deacon Expeters, who was whittlin’ the top of the fence an’ chewin’ a splinter. He never look- ed up at the elder onct. “ «That's my filly, ain’t it? said the elder quietly. “ «Yes, that’s your hoss, E!der,’ said this ere Expeters * ‘An’ you still stick to it, that it’s a trade ?’ ** *Yes, it’s a fair trade,’ said this ere Expeters, kinder dogged-like. “ ‘All right,’ says the elder, “I'll go up to your house an’ git a claw ham- mer an’ a cold chisel an’ take the shoes off, [took ’em off the gelding which died last night afore the trade was con- summated. The shoes appear to be about all I’m ahead on the deal.” -_——_ = How to Brush the Teeth. This is a master of no small import- ance. Most people brush across from the teeth from right to left. This maoner of brushing will not remove the accumulations from beneath them, but tends rather to foree the debris iggo the interstices. The brush should be placed against the teeth at the gums, and rotated toward the masticating sur- faces, It will thus act somewhat like a bundle of fine tooth-picks. In order to make the work effectual, the brush should be applied, as described, both inside and outside of the teeth, and also upon the grinding surfaces of the double teeth. . ee SSS ee ————S___—_Tse a aaa The Most Wonderful Family Excels all other Remedies fur Remedy Ever Known, External Use, pha Diphtheria, 4 CURES — Catarrh, Chol- oup, Asthma, Bron- rs era Morbus, Dysentery, ohitia, Neuraigia, Rheu- + Chronic Diarrhoea, Kid matism, Bleeding at the s ney Troubles, and S inal Lungs, ‘Hoarsene ss, In- 7 pence, chan ten fiuenza Hacking Cough, : I.
