FrEBruary 8, 2005 THE CADRE @ 1] A&E SPORTS Movie Review: Pauly Shore Is Dead! Mark Cameron Contributor Do you remember Pauly Shore? The guy from MTV, and Encino Man, who kinda looks like Adam Sandler but isn’t? “Buddy?” Yeah, that’s the guy! Well, he made a new movie, called ‘Pauly Shore is Dead’ satirizing his fall from being the ‘Weasel’ of Hollywood to being the number-one douchebag in town. I guess Pauly thought ifhe made a movie parodying his life and enlisted all his celebrity friends to appear in it, it would get him back on his A-game. That remains to be seen, but at least Shore is thinking; a lot of people think he really isa knob, and wish they never heard of him, so why not make a movie where everybody thinks he’s dead? Sounds like a plan tome! At the beginning of the film, Shore’s sitcom on Fox has just been cancelled, his ditzy girlfriend leaves him, no one wants to work with him and Carrot-top moves into house! Brutal. His money gone, he’s reduced to parking cars at the Comedy Store and moving back home with his mom. He’s at his wit’s end, until his guardian angel (the late comedian Sam Kitschen) comes to him ina dream and tells him he should kill himself— then everyone will think he was a comedic genius! Pauly doés him one better; he fakes his own death, and takes up a new identity to see to how the world reacts to his suicide. His plan works perfectly for about a week; his fans and fellow celebrities mourn his death, he’s proclaimed an icon, but then his scam is found out and he’s sent to the big. house. There, under the guidance of fellow actor Jeff Bridges (Different watching this stuff? Yes. Yes, lam Strokes) he avoids a deranged fan, and learns what it means to be a figure in the spotlight, thus making his triumphant comeback in tinsel-town! Actually, there is no triumphant comeback— everybody hates him more for faking his death, and now wishes that he was really dead! ( I guess the moral of the story got lost somewhere in the shuffle!) ‘Pauly Shore is Dead’ could be one of the best title’s for a movie this year; but the movie itself is not really funny, not that irritating either; it’s just... there as Shore’s attempt at a comeback. You have to wonder though, how the hell does the guy line up the amount of celebrities he does to appear in his movie? — Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Charlie Sheen, Pamela Anderson, Jerry Springer, Sean Penn (What the hell?) Jason ‘Jay’ Mewes, Tommy Lee, ( who he meets in prison) Snoop Dog, Chris Rock, Tom Sizemore, Michael Madsen, Britney Spears, Dr. Dre, and Bill Maher all appear in this film! Is the movie worth seeing? You could probably find a better way to spend 82 minutes of your day than this.
