Let's tind the sunny side of men, Or be believers in it ; A light there is in every soul [hat takes the pains to win it, Oh! there's a slumbering good in all, And we perchance may wake it; Our hands contain the magic wand; (his life is what we make it. Crop reports from all D yminion continue parts of the | good. A gentle-| man, recently returned from the Soutb-| Western United States, and who hee] passed through the, Western and Nortb- | ern States, in conversation with a| Montreal capitalist yesterday, remarked | that the appearance of thecropsin the} province of Ontario was better than anj thing he had seen in all his travels. | “That may be so,” said the capitalist ; ‘you did not see the equal of the Pro-| vince of Ontario in your travels. It is | not to be found in the United States. | For good land, good farming and an in | ] telligent population, comfortab housed and clothed, Ontario is | unequalled —in America.” We} do not think that this is an exag-| geration, and an assurance of good | crops in such a province meansa great} deal for the Dominion. Fortunately, | this year good crop prospects are re-| ported from all parts of the Dominion. | oi our OWN province the reports are most favorable. Ia fact, at this time| of writing, no drawbacks of any con-} sequence are noted in any quarter. — | Montreal Herald. ~ —>-2-<——. Total Abstinence and Longevity. Time was, andthat not so long gone by, when it was thought that total abstin ence was rather injurious to health, and had a certain tendency to shorten the lives of those who practiced it. So much was this the case that life insurance companies sometimes charged these poor total abstainers an extra premium for the alleged additional risk? This delusion has now been thoroughly ex ploded. It is found,as wasto be ex pected, that on an average total abstain ers are healthier and longer-lived than even moderate drinkers, to say nothing of those who deal in “potations pottle deep. Instead now of teetotalers being charged anextra premium they are found entitled to an extra discount, and some insurance companies are so eon vinced of this by the yearly bills of mortality and the yearly accumulation of statistics on the point that they have a special section and a_ special a special rate for total abstainers,so as to give them the full benefit arising from their greater healthfulness and longevity This is as it ought to be. Any other arrangement handicaps the sober, healthy, total abstainer, and taxes him for the benefit of his tippling brother. Such arrangement is not fair, and all t»tal abstainers ought to insist upon get- ting in the matter of lite insurance, as every other, the full benefit arising from their healthier and more natural habits. - — Toronto tt hohe E te | His Wife Was Wise. He had been very kind and solictious for several days, and at breakfast yesterday morning he suddenly re marked : “My dear, don’t you know how bad it mikes me feel to see yeu !ook so. thin and careworn.” Yes,” she softly replied. “You must have lost at pounds in the last month.’ “I presume so.” ‘And that haggard expression shows everwork and need of rest ?” “Te “Dear me ! but I should never forgive myself if I should go into decline.” “See here, Henry,” she replied,as she laid down her fork and looked bim square in the eye. “You want to drop that. If you think you can pack me off to the country for a month and leave you to gallop aroung here you have got hold of the wrong end of the string.” He sighed heavily, but made no re- ply, and yet, as he stood on the corner Waiting for the car, and Smith asked him how his wife was, he answered : “Picking right up, thunk you.
