O the mtlitor vf the Leamaner, Sik, ~As one week’s delay is required by ** Citizen,” in the Patrwt-oi the 18th inst., to answer my leiter of a week previows, | claim the same indulgence. In reference to depth Of the propesed sewers, [ would says | If the depth mention- | ed in my communication is teo great: they need not be placed.so deep. In fact they should net be placed deeper than would ensure proper drainage from the heuses and discharge from the sewers. ‘do not proféss’ to be’a mechanic or en: gineer, but I do elaim to have a kndwledge of the subject: concerning which I wrote, as I was-enabled to gain from.a residence of a few years in a city where water, works were in Operation and; from frequent yis.ts to other cities similarly aibolced with water, In the cities referred to I never. foun the water to be of the inferior’ character described by *‘ Citizen.”’ Tf St. John, Ni Bi, Halifax, N. S., and London, Eacland, are supplied with. such wateras ‘‘Citizen” describes, does it not seein strange that the people are so blind to their own interests as not to abandon the water works altogether and return to the pump supply ! It is not necessary to make any reference to the irrelevent matter in the opening sen- tences of ‘‘Citizen’s”’ letter. it would have been better had the Patriot published’ my letter at the same time he gave insertion to “Oitizen’s.” The public would then see other arguments in favor of water works whieh ‘‘Citizen” attempt tu question. Yours truly, Tuo. L. CHAPPELLE. a Asylum Management. T'e the Editor of the Examiner. Sir,—The Patriot ef yesterday demands the appointment of another official at the Asylum for the Insane, who shall be a sort of deputy for Dr. Blanchard. I trust the trustees of that institution will not be led into deing anything of this kind. There are, | believe, quite enough officials there. The trustees should see to it that those already there should perform their duties Sei} tniicrais TS much more likely to crear confusion than to premote-etticiency. -It , would seem trom the infermation given in the Examiner that certain duties are as- signed each employee. This isrighi. The Manson outrage is greatly te be regretted, and the perpetrators of it should be severe- ly punished; but the staff is, | think, suffti- ciently large, and, 1 trust, also quite com- petent to give reasonable assurances against the repetition of scenes Jike that which took place on the 20th of May. All will admit that the care of 100 lunatics involves a great responsibility, and while the public will not condone any hardships, muel less cruelty, to the unfortunate and defenceless, they will not, at the same time, justify un- reasoning and indiscrimate censure of officials. coes not I am, etc., JUSTITIA. Ch’town, June 25, 1880. A despatch from Bett’s Cove, Nfid., states that the schooner * R. J. Hart,” from St. John’s to Labrador, with fishing supplies, and a large number of people of both sexes, was crushed by ice on Tuesday night last, 22 miles east south- east of St. John’s. All hands were res- cued and landed at La Scie, onthe French shore. ‘The women and children were almost naked. Vessels have been seut to convey them to this port. The crew saved nothing, barely escaping with their lives. A commission has, it is understood, been appointed to euquire into-the work- ing of mills, factories and workshops throughout the Dominion, in connection with the bill introduced last session by Dr. Bergin, of Cornwall. The duties of the commission, which is composed of Mr. Lukes of Toronto, and Mr. Blakesby of Guelph, will be to ascertain how many children are employed at ten years of age and between ten and fourteen, the hours of labor, the ventilation of build- ings in which they work, the means of escape frona fire, etc. et Iu the jail in Toronto on Tuesday last, while the guard was giving one Gand- raux an injection of morphine, Max Levi, a man who tried to shoot his wile and commit suicide, being in the same ward, noted the proceeding as well as the return of the bottle to the guard’s pocket. Levi, watching his opportunity, snatched the bottle and swallowed the morphiue., Levi was driveu to the hospital, and the usual remedies eflectually applied. aang lege Banquet 70 Sm Cuarves Turrer.— An Ottawa despatch says :—** The citi- zeus of the capital are agitating the sub- ject of a banquet to Sir Charles Tupper. Bass & Co., Burton-on-Trent, are the largest establish- ments of their kind in the world. “Burton- jon-Trent as a Town, is of conbideruble autiquity, but has ne mere remarkable’ ‘feature than its, breweries, for which it is indebted primeurly to the exccllence of its water, but not less to the skill and enter- prising wanggemint of ihe different brew. lng firms who have taken fll advantage of Nature's peculiar bownly in’ this respect. | Bass had established the business and ae- ‘quired a world wide name long before rail- Ways were dreamt of in old England. Mr. | Bass established, in the year’ 1777, the ,brewery that was the germ of the great | business of his grandson, Michael Thomes | Bass. He established» what was. in that large business, and supplied a glass of very good sound pale, amber or brown ale, as his customers might desire. What /& vast difference between this first brewery jand what it isnow! It was built: prob- jably on a plot about the size of a moderate- ‘ly large garden. His descendant now ee- jcupies frechoid , busmess ‘premises extend- ing .,ever forty-five . acres of land, otf ithe value;: of . fully $1,250,090, aid. over,, one hnncred acres .. of other property. Possibly all the power if use inthe brewery in 1777 was manual, in’ soms: précestes probably by a horse, as sidan power was hardly. introduced at that time. Now, Bass & Ce., bfewers, haed thirty-two steam engines of 610 horse power, in the aggregate, and two portable engines of twenty-six horse power. Wm Bass had horses that dragged their loads ove: rutty roads, at present ‘the transporiatioa of material is accomplished through the medium of nine locomotives, their own property, and they have ene hundred, powerful cart horses besides, They have, direct connection with outer Railway. sys- tems by twelve miles of Railway on their own premises, and working arrangements with the Midland Railway Co, over seven” wiles of their branches, they use as many as sixty thousand Railway cars in the’ course of six months, and eften as many all 370 cars in a day. Their casks put on end would make about 2400 pillars as high as St. Peter's at Rome, which is 450 feet high. Babylon was 3 square of fifteen ’miles on the side, these casks would more than surround the walls three times. They pay over $900,000 a year to Railways and Canals for carraiage; they use over 2,000,000 bushels of barley, and 3,800,000 tbs cf hops. The land required for the pro- 67,000 acres at SU vusnels per ‘der’. ~baef consume about 50,000 tons of coal. They pay the Government, as malt tax, per year, avout $1,500,000. The amount ef business dene in one year alone amounts to $12,000,-. 660, Our readers may try to form an ide» of the vast amount of capiral which must be required to carry on a business of this magnitude. In malting, they use during the season about 60,000 busliels per week, and still have to buy from other maltsters about 20,- 000 quarters er 160,000 bushels. The pre- sent Mr. Bass was born in 1799 and edu- cated at the Burton Grammar School... He has held a seat in Parliament for Derby. since 1847, and is a Deputy Lieuter ant for the counties of Derby and Stafford.
