India is a vast country with some three hundred millions of_ people. The density of population, which is very unequal, averages 167 to the square mile. But there are many jungles and wild tracts in which are hosts of tigers and other wild. beasts, and venomous snakes are common even among the thickly populated dis- tricts. Last year the Indian Government _published a report showing that during the year 1,046 persons were killed by tigers. Asingle ferocious man eater in one district killed and ate 65 persons, notwithstanding a special reward oilered _ for his destruction, and was still at large when the report was prepared. More than 3l,0lXi cattle were killed by tigers in India _ _ ill 1932, While 190931133 and Pintlmn de* _,___ , ,i troyed as many more. And yet 1,331 tigers and 4,413 leopards were killed for reward during` the year, apart from those killed ' 3 U _ by sportsmen, for which no rewards were _ claimed.
