We are clubbing to- gether to send $10.00 from our boarding house to get a parcel from a mail order house, and we find we can get cotton thread at l2c, whereas we haveto pay 18c here. What do you make of that?" _ This is a sample of the criticism our last week’s articles brought out, and on, the surface it seems unansvverable. But is ii:?. Let us see. We admit at once that there are certain lines prominently advertised by the mail order houses considerably below the cost of production, or what it would pay to handle at a profit. ' But these are merely the little sprats dangled temptingly to catch the whale. If the iriail purchaser could merely send for these sprats, he, or she, would be con- siderably in pocket provided the freight were paid. , But the freight is not paid, unless an or- der of $10.00 or over is sent. This means one -of two things. The pur- chaser must buy something he probably does not want, to make up the order, - which is extravagance and waste, or go hunting round to get somebody to join with him in making up the order. In the lattercase he is acting as the un- paid traveller _or agent of the Mail Order House. If a local merchant were to offer* him 10 or 15 per cent. commission to turn in similar cash business he would probably turn up his nose at it.. Is that not so ? Next time you think of sending $10 or $40 or $50 or $100 to a Mail Order House for a joint order collected from your neigh- bors, calculate what your services are worth, and then ask what commission the local merchants would allow you on the same cash order. _ If the local merchant cannot offer you equal or better terms then by all means send your money out of the province. Just two examples of the whole theory which may be verified: An Islander' bought a belt from a Mail Order House, for which he paid 98c and thought he had made a bargain. He show- edit to a friend and asked him what it was worth. “Fifty cents,” said his friend. ‘f ‘ “Nonsensel” "' ` ` " “No, see I paid fifty cents for my one,”- and showed him an identical belt he was wearing. The Islander was skeptical, but his friend took him to the shop where he made the purchase, and satisfied him that he had paid 48 cents too much for his bargain.. » Again: A lady writes,-“I would not have believed that ~ (mentioning a mail order house) could over-charge un# til I had personal experience. I got my undervests from them regularly until one day I happened to be in a store and priced some, and would you believe it, they were from fifteen to twenty cents cheaper, and - (mentioning mail order house), would make poor seconds.” The Guardian is prepared to subst`anti- ate both these instances. ` _ Now, dont’ you see how it pays the Mail Order House to advertise below cost one or two conspicuous lines in every-day use?i Give the Local Merchants 50 per cent. of the $600,000 which you send awa , and it will come backto you a hundred foId I ,J Try a. .. .. . _ .lc . .dn-30| ._u_...».. 1 ~..i._3 neil: -AN . - l ._ . ..
