We have just received the re- - port of the Hudson's Bay Company, London, England, on their silver fox sale held March 20th to 22nd. The quantity of sk1ns,—54.84I,—of- fered was the largest collection ever catalogued in a March auc- tion by bhe Company. The major- ity of the skins was of Canadian origin and in color and quality rather poorer than the collection of last year. The market had eas- ed noticeably during the previous few weeks and weaker prices had been anticipated for _the sale. The aggravation of tlm political situa- tion in Europe shortly before the auction had a veg" depressing ef- fect and as a result only 40% of the offering was sold. Although competition was limit- ed there was quite a steady de- mand for full silvery skins at 756% decline com ared with January prices, but ot er colors were large- ly neglected and where sold show- ed a decline of 129694.. Low grades met with a fair demand at fully 15% decline. The following are and highest prices realized. Dar and slightly silvery $12.35 average. the 3.1101186 l! highest price $26.50. The writer has not contacted many fox ranchers lately so is not in a position to state whether this is a season for early or late litters. Some report very few pups prior to April 1st. However, there is nothing particularly beneficial in early litters because they usual- ly mature earlier 1n fur 1n the fall. and have to be pelted sooner. [while thwe that arrive from the 1st to 8th of April are later fur- k ring to maturity and usuaihr s bet- ter color, at least that has been our experience. The lowered cost of fox feed pio- |ducts is certainly making it easier for ranchers 1o pay feed bills. If it keeps up until the end of the season the cost of production will be lowered anywhere from two to four dollars a. pelt-and such fig- ures would make a big difference if last year's crop can be dis of before the new crop is put on the market that there will be some betterment in prices due to the law of slbply and demand, meaning that there will be less pelts on the market in 1940, some estimate one-third less and con- sequently the comparison will be to the advantage of the product and it will not re_qu1re so much forced selling. Mink farmers are suffering with the rest of us. They had a rosy outlook s year ago but the gen- eral lower trend of prices has caught up with them too; but they can stand a far b18891‘ W‘ than we can because it does not cost nearly as much to raise a mink and equipment is cheaper.
