The city teachers were present en masse to pr& their claims. The only absent Oommillor was Dr. Alley. Medi' Weeks appeared before the Connell and made an eloquent appeal for the maoadamlzing of Euston Street from _.Pownal to the Foundry. He also urged that the road in front of his residence be put in a passable condition. Conn. Paton said he had endeavorod to have the street maoadamixed last year but was voted down. A drain would have to betaken out before further work was done. Conn. Hooper said he, with Conn. Paton, had been pressing some time for this work. He hoped the maoadamizing -would be done this summer. J. D. Seaman on behalf of the Teachers madeapleo for increased salaries. He Showed the necessity of skilled labor in the school more than in any other branch of work. Year by year the best teachers are going abroad. How will we keep our teachers is the question for Charlottetown. He showed that those who work on the streets are paid more than the highest teachers outside the principals and vice principals. It may be said that the teacher does not work all the time but the good teacher spends allhis or her time for the school work. 1n187i)the average supplement to the city teacher was $ltl4; last year it was 'only $124 or $10 less than twentyiour years ago. Now they are asking an aver- age of $162 or two dollars less than in 1870, By looking over the assessment list; iirfonnd that 1-EPZ, inoreasein taxes would give the additional supplements. Other cities have given favorable answers to these appeals although they are now givinggreater salaries than those asked for. He closed by asking for favorable consideration at once if possible. Mayor Kelly said it was absolutely necessary, even if taxes he increased, that better salaries be paid the teachers. He i ted out however that there was a po n question as io whether the Council could ive an additional amount. This could ge remedied however, by “H B05 ffm” We Legislature . » Conn.
