Associated Press Financial Writer) i (A. r. By Guardian's Special Wire) NEW YORK, Aug. 11—-'I‘he stock market again leaped over profit- taking barriers in Saturday's brief session and penetrated new high ground for i985. It was the liveliest Saturday trading since Ii‘eb. 24, 1934, trans- fers totalling 1,210,770 shares. The Associated Press average of 60 sd- vnnced .4 of a point at 48.6, an- other 1935 peak. Bullish sentiment predominated from the start. Scattered news dc;- veiopments with a bearish tinge were ignored as the commission house customers piled up orders. "Blue chip" stocks still attracted wide followings, but a. few low- priced stocks came to life for the first time 1n several weeks. Gains. however, were generally restricted to around a. point or less. Washington happenings contin- ued to be overshadowed by bright hopes for fall and winter trade im- provement. Shares reaching New Year's tops with gains of fractions to s. polnE or so, included American Tele- phone at 135 3-8, Western Union at 50 3-4, International Telephone at 12_ N. Y. Central at 22 3-8, Con- solidated Gas at 32 1-4, North Am- erican at 22 3-8, Columbia Gas at 11, Public Service of New Jersey at 42 I-2, U. S. P. by Guardian's Special Wire) OAKVILLE, 0111., Aug. IL-Rfl- venues for Ontario at the cud of the year will show an increase of between $10,000,000 and $15,000,- 000, Premier Hepburn announced at a Liberal rally here in favor of Hughes Cleaver, Liberal candidate for Halwn constituency in the forthcoming Dominion election. The‘ added revenue, he told the meeting last night, to be secured by retrenchment in Government expenditures, increased amusement taxes and a. determined effort to get more than heretofore in suc- oession dues, was a mere bagatelle so long as the province's annual relief cost stood at $35.°°°.990- His speech marked the Prem- icr’s debut in the present federal campaign. He characterised lion. Stevens. Reconstruction l-I- H. Party Leader, as a. "political op- portunist," and a “pretender? Of Premier Bennett he said his trade policy, or lack of policy, had spelled the ruin of the country during the past five years. Every time a Conservative Gov- ernment was in power depression had settled over Canada. So much so “there's many a Tory today who hangs his head in shame for contributing to l-‘lle defeat of Sir Wilfrid Laurier over the recipro- city issue,” Mr. Hepburn said. The Premier promised if Lib- eral leader Mackenzie King were returned to power "he will read- just our tangled affairs and make Canada a happier place in which to live." Mr. King would negotiate trade treaties with the United‘ States and Ontario agriculture and lumber interests would prosper as a consequence. The only Conservative Govern- ment in the country at present was that of Premier Bennett and “that will soon be down," the Premier proceeded. Of the recent election result in Prince Edward Island he said the little Island had been tipped over and "all the Tories dumped into the sea." "What I. fine thing it will be when nine Liberal Provincial Premiers can sit around a table with Machensie King at the head to map out policies bound to im- prove conditions generally through- out the land. Right now I am hampered through getting no co- operation at Ottawa from Prem- ier Bennett." Figures were their quoted b! TRINITY UNITED CHURCH At this holiday season of the year and with such gorgeous weather as we are enjoying it is not only helpful but encouraging to have such s. good congregation as was present at the morning service yesterday. Among the visit- ors present were several advance delegates to attend the Odd Fellows festivities this week. Mr. Horace McEwen presided at the organ and will also be the 0r- ganist at both services nut Sun- day. The guest soloist was Miss Gwynneth Fry whose singing of "Jesus the Very Thought of Thee," by Ward, was listened to with great pleasure. Rev. J. W. Barbour. B.A., B.D., preached in the morning on “The Foundation of Society." The Scrip- ture iessons were Psalm 37, 1 to 11. and 1 Corinthians, 3, 1 to 23. His text was from 11 Sam. 18-8. He pictured the confusion incident to the civil war between David and his son Absolam. The confusion ex- isting today when all sorts of ex- periments are being tried in gov- ernment and in civil life. The situation in Germany, Italy and other countries and claimed that "unless we can establish a basis for our faith and of conduct we cannot hope to save civilization. He referred to Isaiah's vision and as- serted that “confusion may become the road to recovery and a vision of something better may lend us in better living." If our present unrest drives us to a closer rela- tionship with God through penit- ence and consecration than we may glory in our troubles. The things that are confused today are only on the surface. There are deep underlying principles that remain unshakon. Two of these basic fac- tors are the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man. Hit- ler and his followers may question these doctrines but we believe that we all have the same God and that belief is basic to civilization. We can only be a great nation as we recognize the brotherhood of all. The security of orr own posi- tion rests on our recognition of the rights or others. In our society We must recognize these basic principles of common sources and common ends. We have one God- one Father-and we must recognise the brotherhood of men. Rev. W. E. Aitken of St. Peter's Bay was the preacher at the evening service and delivered an excellent sermon from the text Joel 2-28, “Your young men shall see visions."
