These modern pioneers spent much time studying and working out plans which were essential to determine the steps which would be necessary to make such a venture possible. While the initial plans were being construct- ed, Anderson was killed in an over- seas air tragedy, Burke courageous- ly continued to work out the terms and conditions for the airllng His, diligent and exacting work finally brought success, and on October 1. 1941, the Maritime Central Ali'- ways came into being. In the past Bight years the Company has wid- ed new flying equipment. and the number of employees ha; been greatly increased. When flying up. erations were commenced, M. C. A. had but two planes-an eight-pas- senger monoplane and a Ten-ops. $80881" monoplane. This numb»: has increased to fourteen planes in actual operation. Envfable Record 0_ur Maritime Airline has a rc- cord which few airways in the world can equal. At the present, there is only a very limited nuni- ber of systems which have occas- ion to say that not one of the pas- sengers travelling in their planes has been injured in any way. With this reputation to guard and main- tain. travel by air in the three smallest provinces is the fastest and safest means of conveyance. Quite recently M. C. A. has formed a new company in Canada's tenth province, Newfoundland, under the name of Newfoundland Airways Limited.’ The advantages of this excellent air system are numerous and pro- vide interesting matter for re- flection. The benefits derived from air travel in the Maritlmes are un- limited, and almost daily we hear of new instances illustrating it's superiority. First, let us consider the speed of the plane and the part it plays in helping man. Ten years ago a business trip to Upper Canada from Prince Edward Island meant three or four days‘ travel. In those days the only means of transpor- tation was by train, which journey- ed over a slow and circuitous routc. necessitating stopovers and dreary hours spent on a smoky railroad siding. Today, travelling. to the business mart, simply means mak- ing a reservation at his nearest airport, a later departure and an earlier arrival at his destination. The Island vactionist, with only a short time at his disposal, benc- fits greatly by the regular flights He reaches his destination more quickly, and saves valuable time by not having to make the journey by boat and train. The exporter realizes the plane as an important participant in all his commercial enterprises. but it is only in a crisis that he becomes aware of the fact that it is indis- pensable. Such a situation was pre- sented to the Prince Edward Is- land exporters in the summer of 1948, when the abundant straw- berry crop compelled immediate transportation. If it had not been for the swift service by air, many thousands of dollars would have been lost. This speedy method of travel has opened up many new markets for other perishable foods such as live lobster. In 1946, the crustacea were first flown to Bos- ton. and the fishermen received top prices for their catch. Thus in sn- other phase of transportation, the plane has proved it's worth. Mercy Flights Mercy flights are not uncommon in the Maritimes. Many people. seriously ill and requiring immed- iate hospitalization, have been flown from remote districts. Perhaps the people from the Magdalen Islands are among those who profit most because of our Maritime air travel. For mam’ years, the Quebec-administered is- lands were isolated from all out- side civilization from late autumn to late spring because of the ice blocking the Gulf of Sf. Lawrence. Now, such isolation is unheard of. and regular flights connect the Msritimes with these Islands. When air travel was in it's Ln- fancy. many people were of the opinion that this modern means of journeying would undoubtedly Provo very expensive. Recently. this idea has been abandoned. and people realize that travel by air ls the cheapest means of transporta- tion in the long run. This can cas- ily be explained when we compare the expense of travelling by nir with any other means, such as bus, train. or automobile. Think of the money spent in meals. sleeping accommodation, porters‘ tips. etc. while proceeding in any of the previously mentioned vehicles. B! penses are cut to a minimum when one travels by air. as the journey is usually too short to require sleeping facilities. Complimentary meals are served, baggage carried free of charge. stop-overs permit- ted st no extra charge, and every consideration to ensure the safety. comfort. and enjoyment of the passengers in the course of their travels. - The old adage: "Great oakn from little acorns grow" was never more truly applied than in the case of M.C.A., whose small beginning A Steady Return for your INVESTMENT From its incor- ation in I933, ommonwenlth ~ International ra ' baa paid uninterru wd divi enda—n proud record, in aed, You can sbsrc in one of the soundeat h" mediums in Canada and remove the old worries and headaches.
