Birds are awake and ls lon before hiunun folks. As eeirly as .33 or 4 o'clock when the faint s of dawn show in the east. bind voices are begimf-ng to be heard. and by the time most oi us are at our daily toil. the chorus is at its best. ‘Ihen comes a lull dur-. ing the heat oi noonday when the bi-ids are mostly 'a.t rest. But as the glare of bright sun soltens into the mellow glow of evening and a. wel- come coolness settles cver all, the feathered songsters again take to their mrusic and we l-iear "even- song." It can hardly be said that triers is really any difference in the blids’ voices o1- the tones or their songs at these two times, but it sometimes seems that 1:1 the morning i.he.e is a cheery buoyant " ring in their notes — a gla.d wel- come to the day oi activity to 0'11]: while in the evening a touch oi Dmthos marks Iii; tones more 1n_ e oi closing dev. Almost all our ccmmoner cong- binds are given to singing at these times. but unquestionably the greatest pppeal to our ears is at evening. I am pleased to report that every district has gone beyond its objective. A recent circular from Canadian War Service Fund Headquarters at Toronto says; “In the next few weeks tho standing of provinces may be changed materially, u out-lying districts complete their canvass and report additional sums, but it is not likely that Prince Edward Island will lose its standing st the head of the list with 193.01% of quota attained. All honor to Prince Edward Island. Incidentally the Province passed its objective on the first day of the drive.” I know this result is just as gratifying to each worker and contributor as it is to the _mem- bers of the Provincial Organization. Again Prince Ed/ward Island has _led tho Dominion, and to each District Manager, Captain and Canvasser goes the credit for this splendid record. Especially do I wish to congratulate and thank the following District Chairman for the time, ability and inspiration given the campaign by them. Capt. N. W. Lowther, Charlottetown Chair man, who gave unselfishly of his time and achieved remarkable results, is deserving of special recognition. The some is also true of Mr. Peter G. Clark, Prince County Chairman, who has established an enviable record for his Dis- trici. Mr. Clark named Mr. W. A. Currie as Summerside Chairman. With their leadership the Western Capital went forward to a “new high" in this great War Services effort. H. F. MacPhee, K. C., Queen’s County Chairman, and Mr. Roy C. McLean, King's County Chairman overcame the handicap of_ alntost impassibldroads to substantially exceed the objective for their respective Counties, which IS very gratifying to all. The Provincial Secretary, Major T. Edgar MacNutt; Provincial Treasurer, M.’ Alban Farmer, Publicity Chairmen, J. M. Murley, and N. D. McLean, are all deserving of sincerest thanks for the capable manner in which they discharged their duties. I am especially indebted to the Provincial Executive Committee for their support and ad- vice at all times. The support of such capable administrators guarantees the success of any undertaking. Mr. Alfred Pickard very generously gave the organization the use of headquarter’: offlco for several weeks without charge. For this we express our thanks. The Charlottetown and Summerside Radio Stations were generous with their support. The Press has also earned our thanks. - To all organizations and individuals who have contributed directly or indirectly to the success of the undertaking I wish to extend sincere thanks. The organization would like to publish the names of all workers and all contributors but as the cost for such would amount to approximately $600.00 we did not feel justified in diverting such an amount for this purpose; but are arranging instead, to forward each contributor an Official Receipt from headquarters in addition to the Temporary Receipt given by the canvasser. This Official Receipt will be a pro- tection io the contributor as well as to the organization and the cnnvasser. Attached to this appreciation is an account of returns from the different districts, all of "which have been checked and certified. D. J.
