There are lfew men in these seaside provinces who had more success with junior players than the soft-spoken Mac- 'From Little Acorns Great Oaks Grow", and so it has been; with MacNeilI. For the past few years he has been starting from scratch and coming up with cham- pions too often for it to be acci- dental. iNelil. MacNeill perhaps has one point in his favor which the other City coaches do not have. He is hand- ling young plagrs, most of them between I5 and 20 years of age who are in the state of development and who develop in a hurry once they start. In addition to that they have the youthful enthusiasm so neces- sary in winning games. Most. of his players: with few other worries lon their minds, concentrate on lbasehall for the summer months whether it be through practising, talking, devising plays or dreaming about the game. . n . The story behind the Juniors rise to success reads something like one of those magazine stories that one seldom expects to come in con- tact with. Two months ago ihey were on the verge of throwing in the towel after they had lost-four of their better players. At that time practically all they thought they had was is pitcher. a couple of inflelders and outflelders and an old chest. protector. Hard work and determination along with good guidance proved differently. . o 0 In the first game of the double- round-robln series two weeks ago the Junior: lost. 4-2 to M. C. K. In the third game against the Inter- mediate Abbies the score was tied 4-4 in the sixth inning. A Junior loss and the Intermediates would have won the crown. But things were destined for it different end. Two Juniors were out in the sev- enth lnning when they started their rally. At the end of the nev- enth they led 7-4 and the game was called on account of daricness. From then on they never looked back. I O O The man who spelled most of the difference in yesterday evening! game was Donnie Ma.eI.eln. The young rlghthnnqer ,who is having his best season. gave up only six hits and most of them came when the bases were empty. "Punnell" has 3' number of great. perform- ances to his credit this year. among them I no-hitter. when he meets Benny Carson of the Curran and Briggs Juniors in the Island finals the stands should be full of ball fans for they will see a terrific pitching duel.
