The fascinating subject of the action
of electricity on piants at1i'»cted De Can-
dollo as long ago as IW ll. and recent
eletriclans and boinnisr- have given
much attention. Results have been

dens plates of copper and zinc. and
plates connected with a battery, but the
most remarkable iesults s»em to have
been achieved with the °-Geomagneti-
fore,” from atmospheric electricity.
This apparatus is simply alighiiiing
conductor set up in the middle of ii
field and connected below with a series
of cross wires running under tho soil
near the roots of the plants. In France.
such u conductor 25 feet high was found
to exert an influence of over a radius ol
more than 20 yards, and a plot ol
ground within the ana yielded 63 kilo-
grams of potatoes against 35 kilograms
from au exactly similar plot outside.
The resident at the equator says
Grant Allen, has a year of two win-
ners and two summers. The sun pass-
es south to the Tropic of Capricorn on
Dec. 21, when it is winter. comes over-
head in March, when it is summer;
tiavels north to the Tropic of Cancer in
June, which gives winter again, and is
over head once more in September, the
second summer. The temperature

is eventually overpowed by numbers,

miners in some cases being prepared to
pay $500 and even $900 per annum for
each horse-power. Many other iii-
dustries might be benefitted by tapping
different sources of power, such as ir-
rigation in Egypt, and he has found
that the electric lighting of Cairo could
be done cheaper by power generated 4
400 miles away, at the First Cataract, 1
than by steam engines in that city. In
all cases the serious outlay is for cop-
