On November 24. i590, Miss Sheraton, a graduate q; the City Hospital, of St. John New Brunswick. was engaged to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss MacDonald, .Matron of the PEI. Hospital. Miss Sheraton was highly recom- ‘ mended by the medical staff of the St. John Hospital. _ By her suggestion several im- provements were introduced. add- ing to the efficiency of the in- stitution. Among other thin‘ she opened a class for women's in- struction and training. in nursing. The hospital staff then numbered eighteen. including domestics. This movement had the entire nppfOvfll of the medical staff who had long felt the want of trained nurses in this community. I First Graduate 0f School In P Sarah Jean Arthur.‘ born _ at Hazel Grove, when a girl of nine- teen read an editorial in an issue of The Guardian for the year i690 stating that "young women of the higher 'type and of super- ior education" were needed to take up the profession of nursing in the new hospital at Charlotte- town. In December she entered the training school. In two years she had her diploma and became the first graduate of the first school of nursing in the Province. She gave her services for the next year to the school free as did her only classmate, Miss-Ella Tynan. In 1894, Miss Arthur left the school and for the next twelve years ministered to the 510k in town and country. She accepted l position at Fal- conwood Hospital in 1906 and re- mained there until 1009; then went West and did private nurs- ing in Vancouver until i912. Dur- ing the next two years she had. ,charge of two hospitals, the Port Alice Hospital on Vancouver Is- land and. the Powell River Hos- pital in British Columbia.
