One of the more popular shrubs is now a perfect sight with the beautiful arching branches covered with clusters of pure white flowers. It is the well known (Bridal Wreath spires) Vanhouettei in" the cata- log. It is used as specimen and is also useful for hedges. The native White Spruce hedge has been trimmed and this is the time to do this when the new growth is soft and before the ends become. hard. because then there will be brown branches. Tho Siberian Wallflower contin- ues to be lovely with the blue for- get-me-not and its fragrance is making it one of the priud flow- ers of early summer; the color of this variety is orange yellow and the golden bedder in the catalog will bring this most desirable plant to your garden. Flowering Quince or Japonica is new to me and the orange-scarlet flowers are very attractive on the two bushes in the garden. The foliage of this shrub is also good and they will be moved to better positions. White Oak acorns were planted last week; these were given to me by the late Blythe Hurst (Agric- ola) and they are a treasured gift from that wonderful man who had gathered them from his own oak trees. I do hope that they will grow well and they will bring memories of a happy afternoon in the late autumn of last year when we visited together. If you wish a lovely garden at night plant white flowers. and they should be fragrant. My fa- vorite among night-scented plants is Sweet Rocket. Hesperis, named V for the evening star. Once it was f very popular in gardens and known latte, that tragic queen who ap- pears to have loved the simplest flowers. jllowadays the Sweet 1as the favorite of Marie Antoin-' Rocket must look after itself in holes and corners on the edge of respectability. and has even taken to the fields and roadsides in some localities. In this garden it has seeded itself under an apple- tree and it is a pretty sight for weeks, making the garden frag- rant and lovely. especially at night. Dames. Violets and Queen's Gilliflower were old names for the sweet Rocket and visitors to the garden often ask if it is Per- ennial Phlox. 'I'he double Rocket was once even a greater favorits and for hundreds of years it has grown in scotch gardens. but it seems to have disappeared. An evening walk through the garden is a delightful fragrant journey; by planting white flow- ers the garden by night can be- come a lovely place. As moon- shadows of branches lie heavy across the lawn, and the world sleeps, the happy gardener prowls. happy in the silence, and the scents of the evening garden. This is the "companionship more quiet than solitude” And it is only known to those who walk in the garden after darkness falls. Q. PRINCE Al..BER.'l'.
