It may be roughly said that the datics were almost doubled ; and it should not be forgotten that avainst this change the Libcral Fi ‘sted most strongiv.. ev ET putting vote in the Hous. of Lauricr afterwards, it rgotten too, made it his iess to endeavor to excite some ot Quebec, who ugainst the to a Mi should not be 10 ot were not Goverument people rricuitural, ittempting to assist the farmers of Manitoba and Ontario. The hanber- inch, of course, in the eastern § section t the Province and in other parts of the Dominion, objected te the change. They had been using American meats which they were purchasing at low prices and they, of course, quite rightly rom their standpoint objected to being compelled to purchase from the Cana- linn farmer athigher prices. However, the legislation was carried and its wis dom is plainly shown in the effects whichi followed. The verv first year after the tariff was changed the importation of thirty-three million pounds had fallen to seventeen million pounds of the same products, and in 1892-3 had come down to six million pounds, while last vear it was only about four million pounds. In other words, the effect ot the legislation of 1889 has been to protect the farmers’ extent of giving them a market each vear for about twenty-nine imiilion pounds of meat. Upon this point the tarmers of Canada ought to remember the difference in the conduct of the two parties. ‘The Conservative party were anxious that our farmers should have our markets ; the Liberal party that it was better for our railways to make a little money by carrying into our coun- try American products to be consumed yy the Canadian people. Is there a single farmer in this constituency who that upon that question the Liberal party were right? When the contest comes on remember that a vote for a Liberal candidate is a vote in detence of the conduct of Sir Richard Cartwright and Mr. Laurier upon the neat product question. cileves THE PATRONS AND RAILWAYS. The Patrons of Industry in Ontario ire demanding that the Government shalleceas: granting aid to railways. Chis seems rather remarkabie since the nain plank in the policy of the Patrons if ludustry in Manitoba is that Govern ment aid toa very large amount shall he given at once to the Hudson Bay Railway in the interest of the farmers ot that portion of the Dominion. — It cannot be said that the Patron lodges of the Northwest are separate and distinct nd have no connection with the Patron lodges of Ontario, since only the other day a Supreme Patrosi lodge was form-— ed for the whole Dominion There is; therefore, this. very funy spectacle presented: the Patrons of the west threaten to defeat the Government for t doing what the Patrons of the east threaten to defeat the Govermment for doing. There can be no doubt that the Patrons of the west have more sense, from a farmer’s standpoint, than haye the Patrons of the east. The large sums spent in railway aid in every province of the Dominion have done more to assist the farmers than any other class. The great pro lun of the present day, so far as agriculture is concerned, is, how to reach rhe markets of the world as cheaply as pos:ible. Thy Canadian Government have end ‘avor. ed to solve this for the farmers of Canada by two metheds. First, by iiding railways and thus bringing com- petition into the interior parts of thy country, and second, by Geepening th: canals, which are the great competitor with the great railway lines to the sea- board. instead of condemning th Government for bonusing railways, every farmer who considers his inter- ests sensibly should be grateful for ths railway development policy of the’Con- servative party. RADICAL CHANGES, Have tvken place in Medical Practice dnr- ing the Past Few Years, Hamitron. Feby. 1S—A radical change has taken place in the past few years in medical practice. Large nauseous doses are no longer the rule, but where possible medicines are administered in the concen- trated form of fablets and pills which are more easily taken by the patient. This fact, more than anything else, caused the use of the pill form for that sterling remedy, Dodd’s Kidney Pills. These pills are sugar- coated, easily carried about and easily taken. They require no alcohol to pre- serve them as a liquid remedy would, and for this reason are preferable to liquid rem- edies. Another important feature of these pills is that they have never yet failed to cure any form of kidney disease.
