To the Editor o the Exumiver, Sir,—I_have been agitating for some years the advantage a water boat would be to the crossing, placed at Cape Tormen- tine With a crew to come cut at a time when we have afew miles of open water. The Post Office Iuspector and the Govern- ment »ppear to have taken the matter into consideration ; but they seem to think the small sum of a dollar will induce the parties crossing to do almost anything. When | tell you of the genorous offer they ‘have made for the service in question, | am sure sir, you will be taken aback and not be in- clined to believe it. The offer make is eighty dollars, not per trip, but for the winter, with a crew of seven men and the boat to be’built on the Jife-boat principle. Now, sir, I think I can sow you there is a ; } imaginery-about it. In the first place, when we know there is water at Cape Tor- mentine ang blowing fresh, we either do not go or goat the risk of having to put back, and if night is coming on and high wind with heavy sea running we have only two alternatives ; one to take the water, the other tolie out for the night. This may be of little consequence as regards the boats’ crews. But the safety of the mails and passengers ought to be a consideration. Adventures of this kind have happened the Islaud members several tines when going to Ottawa. At one time the boat the Hons. Dan. Davies and James Yeo were in shipped. a sea, and if she had a second one before she was bailed out, they would have had a hard struggle for their lives. This day all the members crossed. Governor Haviland was the otily one whd witnessed the Davies and Yeo adventure, as he was sitting facing the stern of the boet that he was in. Last winter the members who crossed had a similar ‘advénture. William Heard and:Dr. Jenking are men who have erossed several times, and have been to the pains of informmg ing. Mr. Muttart, (on one occasion last winter) had the sea so high that an ordin- ary bailer was of no use. One of bis men kicked the cover off a passenger’s trunk and used it bailing, otherwise they would have been lost. But, I, suppose, Mr. Editor, @ number of majl bags and pas- sengers Must perish on the Straits before the Post Office Inspector and Government at Ottawa will give themselves any bother about the matter. If it was for anything to benefit the Georgetown and Pictou routes, the Inspector, perhaps, would not feel so contracted in the matter. But the Capes are doomed to put up with indiffer- ence all round the board. The lion of the tribe of McDonald has taken from the Island all the hopes we had of a voice in the Government. Now that we are under the merciful hand and kind consideration of Sir Charles Tupper, we must put up with our lot for the present and trust in the future. It is believed to be a question if Nova Scotia pays as much to the revenue of the ominion, in proportion to its size, as P,. E. Island does. Then why leave it without a voice and give Nova Scotia two? lt is also said P. E. Isiand pays over $200,000 to the revenue more than it re- ceives, exclusive of the Fishery Award. Poor P. E. Island has fallen into bad hands. Arraour Irvine. P. S.—We refer to Mr. Hackett’s re- moval by Sir Charles Tupper, no doubt for the purpose of making room for a Nova Scotia friend. | ie * To the Editor of the Examiner. Dear Srn,—I take occasion in this letter to speak of the bad name New Perth is unjustly receiving, on account of certain desperadoes who come from other places, and disturb the place of meetings. . The peace-loving residents of this locality were goaded to madness on the evening of January 2nd, hy these characters, whe came in force to disturb our Singing School After frightening the fair sex with lan- guage calculated to suit the lower regions of the unseen world, they proceeded to destroy the furniture of the school. Some of the singing scholars, who endeavor te maintain order and overpower the ruftians, received some slight injuries. This is all the more disgraceful, when it is learned that the head man, in the disturbance, held at. one time, an office in the metropolis of this little Province. Is there nota law against the ravages of such characters? Are civil people to be be abused and in- sulted? Are meetings to be disturbed ; is furniture to be destroyed, and still no action taken against them? There are Penitentiaries in this broad Dominion of ours, which can hold such outlaws; and if speedy efforts are not taken to have them incarcerated in places of confinement, the gallows will certainly rid the people of their presence. By giving this a place in your very valu- able paper, you wil] much oblige Yours truly, cit London suited me with spectacles.
