The hammock should be six and a quar- ter feet from the ground atthe head and three and three quarters above ground at the footend. The rope at the head which fastens it should be one foot, and at the foot should measure four feet. It may sound as though this made the hammock very high, but it is just right, as our women have foundout. Forcon- venience und effect, a hassock is used on which our fair one steps and swin herself in place from the foot end. ee this way there are no ‘‘tucked up” skirts, and one’s shoes are not more conspicuous than one’s head. The hammock paraphernalia is now as important an addition to the summer girl’s outfit as tennis racquet or parasol, and it requires infinitely more careful thought. The hammocks themselves are beauti- ful, being woven of strands of colored silks. A brunette chooses a yellow and black one with heavy fringes, while a blonde takes a soft baby blue and white one. One black-eyed belle has packed a gorgeous crimson one. With the hammock go the pretty varied colored silk blankets and down illows made of white linen and em- »roidered with the owner’s monogram. Hammocks may be made of straw, grass, or any other appropriate material. These hammocks ere swung on piazzas and across halls quite as often as on the lawn.—New York Sun. Fraudulent Sweetbreadsa. “A true sweetbread is perhaps the most wholesome meat that can be eaten,” said a doctor yesterday, ‘‘but you are never able to get it. The sweetbread proper is the pancreas, which is one of the most effective agents in promoting digestion, but the sweatbrerd of trade is usually obtained from the throats of cattle and is what is called the thyroid gland. This gland rests against the windpipe, and while its texture is simi- lar to that of the real sweetbread, it has not the same beneficial qualities. But some butchers, in order to make money, pass off the salivary gland, that which furnishes the saliva located in the cheeks, for asweetbread. This is the most in- ferior substitute for all, The pancreas or real sweetbread is a most dainty morsel, It is of triangular form, while the sweetbreads obtained from the throat are of an oval form. But what is the use of making people dissatisfied? They have been eating thyroid and sali- vucy glands for sweetbreads for years and have been satisfied. But then they have never tasted the real thing.” —Pitts- burg Dispatch. Secrets In Domestic Economy. A heated knife will cut hot bread as smoothly as cold. Do not iron black stockings, but pull them into shape and dry in the shade. To keep cheese from molding or from drying wrap it in a cloth dampened with vinegar and keep it in a covered dish. Try equal parts of ammonia and tnr- pentine for removing paint, then wash- | ing in suds, Do not wash windows with soapsuds. A little alcohol and water rubbed on quickly will leave the panes bright anc shining, if wiped dry. Oilcloth should never be scrubbed, but washed with a soft ciotk in lukewarm water, to which bas been added a littie salt. Pumice stone is good for cleaning enameled ware, You can drive nails into hard wood without bending them if you dip them Whether she keeps this resolution or not, Lucile Gregg will never think 01 certain events of that summer without a thrill of shame. Without a thought of wrong, save ir merry pursnit of a good time, many : young girl has been led to some foolisi. act which has lefta stain on her reputa tion, and caused her hours of hutmilia- tion afterward.—Olio Farmer. a Scientific Notes. ees Gas pipes of manilla coated with as- phalt have been used successfully. Paper tubes for holding yarn or thread are a recent English invention. A certain sign of death is when th: temperature of the body in the armpii is 65 degrees. It is only recently that the science o: medicine has reluctantly admitted as true the phenomenon of hypnotism. A Chicago genius has invented r method of street lamp lighting whereb, it is only necessary to open a valve con necting one of the large holders at ti: gas works to light the lamps of tix city. A horse shoe without nails has beer invented. It is held to the hoof b- clamps and can be pnt on and taken off in less than a minute. ‘The horse shoers’ union says it will never come ii practical use. In the western deserts a spot of gronnd becomes excessively heated, causing the air above to descend. This speieaien an influx of the atmosphere from ali sides, but unequally, the result being a gyratory motion and a sandstorm. Dr. Fletcher, of Cincinnati, in proof of his theories of ‘‘tooth grafting.” im lanted some dog teeth firmly in the leg ne of s goat and caused them to grow there. The use of electric heat for electric street curs is steadily extending, and is likely to soon be the rule rather than the exception. Over 200 electric street rail way lines in the United States are now equipped in whoie or in part by electric heaters. Their superiority to the coal stove in every respect is obvious. They do not take up any passenger space, as they are attached to the seut raiser; they throw off no odor, dirt, dust oi: smoke, and they require absolutely no attention from the time the car leav the carhouse in the morning until it re- turns at wigot, and then only to turn a switch on or off. “Ta-ra-ra"’ Brought Her Back to Life. A devout woman of a fashionable Back Bay street was recently sick, as her family and friendg believed, untu death. She had inade her preparation» and was daily awaiting her end with atient resignation. Her hours of sui ering were cheered by the glimpses oi the unseen world that came to her, an one day she called to her attendant: who were grouped around her in hourly anticipation of her decease: ‘Oh, thut heavenly music. Don't you hear it | Strongly impressed in spite of thein | selves by her fervor, they strained thei ears to catch the harmonies of heaveu, when acyclonic burst of sound from a street organ, manipulated by aw Italian across the etreet, swung full into the rollicking measures of ‘"Ta-ra-ra boom de-ay,” accompanied by a tambourine.
