= Sa dine the Pacific Coast. cael aie Ports on A correspondent of the Sun says that he ouly question is Vu ie the ju urs vreat city of the Pacitie econ is to be. Within the lase 20 years trom a city of 8,000 to one of 40, , Portland has grown OOO.and as it is accessible of the largest sea going vessels, and as the general Government is improving the channel | throngh the bar at the mouth of the Co-umbia,there is no perceptible reason why Portland should not maiotain its | rival in| lead and ultimately become a San Francisco itself. Tacoma, the ocean terminus of the North Pacific, and Seattle, both situatedon Puyet ave thriving and enterprising towns,1ad both with the biiterest jea'ous y ol each other aspire tu be the future great city, heir ha are most every respect, except that they are too deep to afford good an Each ‘laims to have the best harbor and the best of everything else, but so far as a rbors excellent in woracre. lisinterested person can see, there is uo | essential ditference between them except that Tacoma has the best hotel,an exceed ingly wood one, and has been designat- edas the terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Modern Speculation. One of the most striking illustrations of modern speculation is found in the re cent action brought in New York by Artemus Holmes (himself a lawver) against J. B. Chaffee and others fo: fraud. One of Chatiee’s associates ad vised Ilolmes to invest ina mining com- ny snd io fact urged the investment ove of the bighest value. Holmes made inquiry of Chaffee concerning the mine and was assured in the highest terms. Holmes thereupon purchased shares to the amount of $13,000, all of which was sunk and he then brought suit for fraud. No defence was made {the verdict was for principal and ior the interest amounting to $15,000. This Chaffee was estimated a million- aire only « year ago and U. 8. Grant, ir., was considered a lucky fortune unter in marrying his daughter, but pow it appears that the weelth was only on paper and Chaffee at present addition to listened to snot worth a doliar. In bis be has ruined all who his persuasions. a. e A Poisonous Sherry. The medical papers of England are making an outery over a new species of unsuspected poison, which they assert is making sad havoc with the stomachs, if not the lives of Eoglishmen. The article complained of is a cheap grade of so called sherry, which is manufac- tured at Hamborg, and exported through Holland to England in enormous quan- tities. Eminent physicians declare over their own signatures that this so called wine is 9 pure artificial product. They say that for many years the true sherry of commerce has been fortified at Zerez and elswhere in Spain, with what is known as “Dutch spirit” and which is simply alcohol distilled from potatoes and sent from Holland teSpain. They allege that now thrifty burghers of Holland and Germany have hit upon a method of utilizing Dutch spirit at heme and are producing wine without uny aid from grapes of any sort. The stuff complained of is, the doctors say, composed of nothing but alcobol, sugar, water, and common table salt. ene Oy o-———e Young Men :—Read This.
