Mr. Blair that the Government bad not decided to commence construction of the Belfast Murray Harbor Railway next spring. THe Examiner’s correspondent is o reliable that news des~ | patched by him may be usually depended | upon as true. But we hoped that he | he had made a mistake in this case, and | | j that the Pairiot of the succeeding day would contain acontradiction of his report. silent about the The Patriot remains matter. We are therefore to conclude that | the Government is not going on with the} Belfast Murray Harbcr Railway this year. § The energy displayed in the survey of the | line bas, apparently, oosed out of the | Administration. Or has its attention all been. diverted from our requirements to those of tie great Province of Ontario, recently in the throes of a Provincial election and tothe golden fields of Klon- dike? Tne Yukon Deal has not been the topic within the sacred precinets of the Privy Council Chamber at Ottawa. A newspaper iesued in the interests of the great reform party in the town of Trenton, Ontario, published for twoor three weeks previous to the late election a hanusome picture of the Minister } of Railways at the head of the editorial column. Beneath the picture is tbe legend : “HON. A. G. BLAIR. Minister of Railwsys and Canale. A million and a half for the Trent Valley Canal. This announcement, is given great dis- play, and is followed by the coat of arms of Great Britain and the copy of a letter: “Dear Mr. Biccar,—I think we are making a very substantial increase this | year, as you will observe when tbe esti- mates come down in conrection with the Trent Valley work. We are doubling the amount whieh was last year appropriated for that purpose. (Sgd.) A. G. Bratr.” Office of the Minister of Railways and Canale, Ottawa, 13 February, 1898. This announcement, in advance of th® estimates, isin marked contrast to that which the Minister of Railways has lately made in connectivn with the Belfast and Murray Harbor Branch. But, then, our Provincial election was oot beld this year; and perbaps the promise Jately made in| connection with the Treut Valley canal } may prove to be as unsubstantial as that ' which was, when an election was held here, | made tothe people of this Provioce conoection with the Belfast and Murray Harbor Railway. JOHN (st. John Sun) From the opening of the season in Degember until the end of February, thirty steamships, exclusive of the Furness liners, which have pot carried much western goods this winter, have sailed from St. John with full cargoes for British ports, The value of these cargoes was, in round numbers, almost $3,120,000, including United products to the value of a little over $556,000. Of the total, the Beaver line carried to the value of $1,486. States 000 to Liverpool the Allan-Thomson line $710,000 to London, the Donaldson line $597,000 to Glasgow, and the Head line $326 000 to Belfast and Dublin. Thie is the third eeason of 8t John win- ter port trade. In the season of 1#95-6, the total of this trade was less than $3,000,000 In the whole of the season of 1896-97 there were forty-six cargoes cleared, and if we average them at a value of $100,600 each, which wonld probably be above the mark, the total valine would be $4,600,000, The present season is little more thau halt through, and there is already @ total value of $3,120,000, so that when this eeasen’s total is made up it will doubtless show as great an increase over 1896-7 as that seas- on did over the preceding year. But it is also to be borne in mind that large as has been the volumn of trade thie year, the Canadian Pacitic railway has been compelled to refuse a great deal more that would have come this way bad there been ample steamship and other accom- | modatiun. -—- An English mining expert declares that the Klondike gold fiel¢- are not a pateh on those of Ontario, w'' 4 thirty-six hours of Toronto.
