There will be a few exceptions and one of them is Angel's first record, released at the end of 1975. Angel is a five piece band hailing from Washington, D.C. Newman reveals the WINNER! and they are the leaders in the conspiracy to put life back into American bands. I've had my fill of lack lustre American bands such as Aerosmith and /Z Z Top, who are as repetive as yawns in ran Ec onomics class. The book is spiced with personal anec— dotes on the habits and ec— . centricities of the super- rich. I The book itself is divided into five major sections: personal power - the individ- uals; veto power - the bank— ers; separate power; money power - how it's spent; and .network power - the select elite. 1 _ [The first chapter of the book details-the lives of .ghe.two,mqst powerful men in For fans of heavy .metal (which isn't dead yet., thanks to new bands like Moxy and Max Webster), this album features enough mind bending power to give your stereos a" demanding work-out. The section on banking is a slightly boring one - mainly because banks in Canada are ‘ boring. Theyare controlled ‘ by stolid, staid businessmen whose big excitement is dar- ing to wear a colored shirt. By far the most interesting and incisive chapter in the book is that dealing with seperate power. Newman intro— duces us to the men who have Swealth and power and delves into their rationale as to why they should control that wealth and power. He shows us both the fierce competition and the furtive collusion_ \whichpermeates the business world. As these.men see it, free enterprise came to us via stone tablets incribed by God, and their duty is to use the system to their ad- vantage. It is this chapter which shows the rich in Can— ada as they really are. rThe last two chapters of the book are purely descriptive, telling us about the eccen— tricities of the'richi Newman also describes the machina— tions of the rich as they The Cadre, Thursday, September 23, 1976, page 9- d of American hand but ultimately there is.on] y ONE Bowie. What can you say about an album that contains classics like "Space Oddidy", "Jean Genie", and "Suffergette City", to say nothing of "Ziggy Stardust", "Changes", "Rebel, Rebelfl, "Young Americans". and "Fame", and on and on (****) CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ROCK & ROLL- NAZARETH (A & M RECORDS) This is the best product from Nazareth since "Razamanaz", which of course isn't saying much. Whereas on "Loud n' Proud", "Rampantz, and"Hair of The Dog",the band suffered from poor material (for example, the best songs on "Loud 'n Proud", "The Ballad of Hollis Brown" and "This Flight Tonight" were shows that Nazareth can write fine songs. Thw whole band works out doing what they do best, that being energiz— ed rock 'n roll. All you Nazareth fans have already bought this album, and maybe you who aren't should too. ‘It's close enough for me. really are strive to maintain their position.'The most interest— ing part of these two chap— ters details the influence of C.D. Howe, the man who set the direction of the Canad— ian economy after World War 11 and who intréduced the foreign ownership which pre— vails today. . This book also contains indexes of the hundred most important corporations in Canada, the richest and most powerful people, and the peo— ple who hold directorships in various companies. This is an extremely read— able book as Newman has a very relaxed, fluent writing style. It is not a book which offers social commentary; it 'simply describes the Canadian establishment. I would urge people to read it bevause it is entertaining and informa— tive. besides it really does not hurt to know who runs Canada. I would suggest that you go to a library, however, as it costs $14.95 (no pap— erbackavailable and you wou- ld only be adding more money . toflthe coffers.o£.theesuper~ rich.
