APRIL 10. 1952 Lenten Meditation from The Columns of The Tisnes. London. PROPHECY AND PIJLFILLMENT Time was when the fulfilment oi pr-opnecy was regarded as one of ma major arguments in Christian gpologetics. Prophecy, on this Vi",-, was largely identified with prediction. The chapter headings in old copies of the Authorized version show how far this could be carried. so that some oi the psalms were attached to events in the liie of Christ, and a" number of pro- phecies were inter rated as fore- casting the history of the Church. Historical study of the Bible has made it mpossible to maintain such 5. position any longer. It is now seen that the prophets were so great "because they spoke the word ct! God to their own Boneration in its bearing upon the situations by which it was confronted. Their message was to the present, and not to generations to come. The Christian should be more concerned with the spiritual mes- sage of the prophet than with tiiose rare occasions on which he was able to anticipate the future. Even when the former rather mechanical view of the relation between Old Testament and New Testament had perforce been abandoned, in connexion remains and has to be accounted ior. Especially at two points does it seem too close to be explained away due merely to chance. Jere- miah in his prophecy oi the New Covenant anticipated a fresh dis- closure of God's will to men-in mercy rather than in command- ment-which should take the place of Israel's religion as he knew it. second Isaiah speaks of the ser- vant oi the Lord whose mission is to the nations. and who wins men by dying at their hands. Each oi these prophecies has been taken up into the New Testament, and it is not possible for a Christian to read them without seeing in them a preparation for Christ. How then are they to be related to him? Perhaps it would be best to in- terpret the connexion between prophecy and fulfilment as paral- lel to that between man's prayer and God's answer. These two pro- phets were men who entered deep- ly into their time in sympathy. and into the purpose of God in prayer and duiication. They saw what was required if the human needs to which they were so sensitive were ever to be satisfied. and they knew enough of the heart or God to discern diml what He would do in is own time. Therefore they of-ier to him their intercession for their fellows, and their own yearning for the deliv- erance which he alone could achieve. 1-! only God would lead men into a Iuller and more gracious revela- tionl If only one might come who would suffer as so many prophets had suffered and prevail as no prophet had prevsiledi These were the prayers that men of God of- icred to Him, and Christ came as the answer to them and was cruc- ified at Calvary, rising again from the dead at Easter.
