The Cadre Panther January 13, 1998 PORTS Hockey Panthers Suspensions Reviewed By Billy McQueen AUAA suspensions were issued as a result of the brawl that occured early in the hockey season (November 15, 1997) between the Panthers and the Acadia Axemen. Puck Panther Jonathon Murphy, who was suspended for instigating two fights a subsequent fight and atwo game misconduct was given a 12 game suspension. This suspension was later reduced to six _ games. Jeremy Pierce's suspenston was also reduced, his from 10 games to six games. Acadia’s Jeff Mercer’s suspension was reduced from a nine game suspension to 4 games. Also, Acadia’s Bruce Watson's 14 game suspension was reduced to 8 games. Dave MacLean, hockey chairman of the AUAA said, “We in the AUAA were concerned that we were double penalizing players for the same offence when itcameto CIAU sanctions and upon checkingwith our colleagues across the country, this was confirmed.” Obviously the Panthers will welcome back the two players after playing somewhat shorthanded for a good deal of the season. MacLean left a warning for the players though. “I am certain that all the players involved are aware that the AUAA does not condone sction a as this. Repeated behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with harshly.” Sports Briefs By Billy McQueen Well, the new ‘98 season is upon us, and this semester is packed with sporting events. The highlight to look forward to is the women’s basketball AUAA finals at UPEI. The women are showing great stamina in the AUAA’s this year. They have conceded only one loss and remain at the top the league in the basketball standings. The girl’s dominated Acadia at home this weekend in a 66-37 victory. Kate Ellis had a great game dropping field goals from everywhere on the court, as well as playing good defense. The men’s team had a 98-53 loss against a very talented Acadia side. The men’s team only needs one more win to beat last season’s record. Scott Batemen came off the bench and had his best game of the season. Hopefully we'll see more of him on the court this year. The Hockey Panthers had an exibition game against the University of Manitoba during the break and a lost a close one 5-4. Things are looking up for the Puck Panthers who will be able to use suspended players Jonathon Murphy and Jeremy Pirece due to AUAA suspension reductions. The only home games this week are hockey -- SFX on Saturday and Sunday...see you there.
