This score pretty well ra- presents the play, but by no means the hilarity and fun enjoyed by the record crowd in attendance. Some surprisingly smart plays were pulled of! by these gay old his-beans in the ileld and a lot of good solid hitting was displayed. Only in the base-running de- partment did the boys betray that their athletic glory was as the glory of Greece and Rollie, now departed. A lot of these boys had been balls of fire in their palmy days, but as iar as base-running was concerned were pretty well cooled out in this year of 1049. Some were reckless enough to dash madly for the next base to pull up putting and happy, but most were wise enough to wait forhits to keep them advancing. Stewart, Surnmeraide se c o n d sucker, took a bicycle to the plate with him in the first inning but Col. Fred McLeod behind the plate decided it would be breaking some rule or other and wouldn't allow its use. (Some of the fans claim MacLeod is wrong because thero is nothing in the rules that says you can't use a bicycle)’. The same player made a foot- ball tackle on Freddie Whalen in the third inning, slowing him down to a crawl, but Freddie was allow- ed to proceed to third because of interference. Glennie DesRoches took of‘! the breast protector which he has been wearing all season, discarded his indicator. and stepped to the plate with a bat in hand. He declared hlrnseli hit in the leg by the first pitched Iball and trotted ofl to first. No- ibody said anything because you can't argue with an urnlre. The following is the box score but no guarantee of its accuracy goes with it. The coaches kept changing play- ers continually to prevent any- olneb collapse on the field of bat- e. The Parkdale boys have been playing heads-up ball lately and should make things plenty interesting for the Western Capital youngsters. French Boxer Defeats Greco In Exhibition (By John D. Hamilton) MONTREAL, Aux. 3 -- (CF)- Franceh Laurent Dauthuille dis- posed of Montreal's joiting Johnny Greco in short order tonight when he knocked out the Canadian wel- terweight champion in the fltth round of a non-title, IO-round box- ing match at the rain-drenched Montreal Baseball Stadium. A near-capacity crowd lat through nearly an hour's heavy rain in the biggest open air tight event of the local season to sec Greco, weighing 153 1-2 meet Dnu thllille 155 1-2. ' Dauthuille held the edge all the way and Greco attempting to step up into the middleweight class, couldn't seem to get going. Both fighters had trouble get- ting their Sunday punches going on the wet canvas. The K. O.'came with startling suddenness at the 2.57 mark of the fifth. Greco had been bulling in, unable to get past Dauthuille’: up- right stance. Dauthuille went on the attack and hurt Greco with a swift and hammering series of blows. A left hook straightened up Greco, then a right cross finished him. Greco slipped to the canvas, sat there dazed for several seconds. then with a sigh collapsed on his back and was counted out. An unofficial estimate placed the crowd at 19.000—a.n outstand- ing crowd considering the rainy weather. Although there had been intermittent showers all day, pro- moter Raoul Godbout decided against calling the card off. When the main event went on. the rain was‘ 80M but i116 Yin! was exceptionally slippery. Before Lamotta won the crown from another Frenchman, Marcel Cerdan, Dauthuille had scored a lo-round decision over him in Montreal. Dauthulilds speedy prozrcsswfls shown clearly by his mastery 0! Greco. i-ie has fought only a. few fights in North America but has won them all and now is rated fourth middleweight in the world. For Greco. the loss was a. bitter one. Once the darling of Madison Square Garden, New York. where he fought many main event bouts, Greoo was no match for his slightly NORMAN MaoLEOD Recording Secretary heavier opponent. It was Grace's first serious vent- ure into middleweight ranks and he failed to solve Dauthuilles fast. upright boxing style. While Dauthuille stood up and fought from long range, using a lightning- fast left jab and s. solid. short right hook, Greco bulled in but seldom got home a blow. Several times. Greco slipped to the floor although there were no lmockdowns before the iinal kayo. The wet canvas bothered Greco much more than Dauthuille.
