Charles J. Burns, of Evansville, In sys the f ; Wabash has won seven races off the reel this summer, and only beaten or Oa that occasion he fell down. At Bedford Park, on Wed nesday |: he easily beat J.C, Mason's black gelding, the Majer, a miie in 2.20 Atter the race Col. Burns deci fed to tan effer $1,500 for his fleet-foot ret Bhs ACC} ed Loving. The calf is nearly 134 hands high, his legs are like those of a giraffe, and his horns are tipped with niekle plated knobs. Col. Burns bought the calf when.a yearling from an Indiana farmer, who was driving the split-hooted trotter to a sulky, and beating all ordinary roadsters with case. The calf is of plebeian blood, and was bred, raised and trained by the farmer. Uitched to a light wagon, Wabash trot—| ted to Belmont Park, Wednesday atter- noon, and was sent round the track several times ata 2-minute gait. The ealf’s wind and sound, and his owner says be has driven him 40 miles a day without making him turn a hair. fast and steadily in harness, he is much speedier When runping under saddie. To show the calf’s speed, he was sad- died and mounted by a 115 pound jockey, and Mr. Horton’s bay mare Clorinda, with a record of 2 24, was started against him. Clorinda went away in the lead when the word ' go . was given, but Reilly, the jockey on the| eal’, quickly clapped spurs. isto its sides, and, with a bellew that was beard a mile off, Wabash heisted his tail like a jackstaff and set sail after the trotter The erowd of horsemen present at once saw the Wabash had a mixed but fast gait that is peculiar to himself When on the backstretch his legs seemed to eprangle out on all sides at once, and he Lowed his back like a bucking broncho and blew a clewd of steam out of his nostrils. Col. Burns proudly waved his hand toward himand said to the crowd onthe quarter stretch. “Now, you all watch that critter hump himself, If “humping” meant bellowing until the astounded Clorinda bolted across the tract and stood trembling against the outside rails, Wabash certainly did what the colonel expected. Wabash came along like a locomotive, passed the bewildered mare and was lobbing into the homestretch before timorous Clorinda’s driver could induce her te tret. Wabash won by an eigth of a mile, and was eneored by every spec- tator A North Carolina girl had her hand completely severed from the arm by an axe. The physician, not being in con- dition to amputate the arm above the wrist, replaced the hand, secured it with silver stitches and adhesive plaster, and having bound both arm and hand to abroad splint, ordered them to be kept warm with hot flannel cloth. The third day pulsation could be plainly felt in the hand, which had also ehang- ed its color.
