THE CLAHOR FUR PROTECTION.
The Manufacturers’ Association rein-
forced by Mr.Tart.e are demanding higher
protection for Canadian industries, and
again we hear the cry that the Dominion
is being made the dumping ground for
the cheap manufactured produits of the
L cited States and Germany. But our
manufacturers have hitherto iounu it
dinlcuit to agree among themselves as to
thcpreeiee tart! they want. Two years
a go they besieged Mr. Fielding who asked
them than to adjust their difemnces and
arrange a full tariff' schedule to their
liking. A year was spent by a committee
of the Association on this work and early
last session the schedule was taken to
Ottawa. They rfered to show it to the
Finance Minister but declined to present
ployment.

these industries enjoy the highest protec-
` tion ever given in Canada. Moreover V,

been still more highly protected than it

lence general distress. Over production
brought serious trouble there, resulting
| in decreased wages, the shutting down ‘
i of a number of large plants and the failure
» “_ of bank after bank. That was more than _
5 year ago. It was followed six \ months
later by trouble in the great steel ind ustry
ofthe United States, which anteiated the
trouble in Canada. Now it is well known
that in the States the steel lndustry is
favored with the highest protection in the
world, so high in fact that the manufac-
turers were able to charge $28 per ton for
steel rails in the home market while sell-
ing the same quality of rails' to other
countries for $18 and that at a good pro-
fit. And yet wages have been out down
there, and many thousands of American
steel makers have been turned out of em-

It is announced that the surveys for the
Grand Trunk Paciflo have been completed
eastward from Winnipg to Lake
Abbitibi, which lies near the western
boundary of Quebec Province. This covers
something more than half and less than
two thirds of the distance between
Winnipeg and Quebec City. We are not
informed of any survey being made in
New Brunswick, so far.
“Another Citizen" writing The Examin-
er contradicts the statement as to the
number of convictions, etc., twenty~five
years ago. The year referred to in our _
was 1877, in which year there
were 16 policemen employed and there
were also 729 convictions for drunken-
ness. “Another Citizen” quotes figures
for 1878, showing there were fewer coc-
victlons and also fewer policemen em-|
ployed in that year. This is_simply an _
evasion. The Guardian' original state-
ment was absolutely correct.
Few are perhaps aware of the extent
which irrigation is being applied in Assi-
niboia and Alberta. A recently published
blue-book and maps show that there
now 169 canals or ditches in operation,
" covering a distance of 469 miles. These
are capable of irrigating no less than 614.-
684 acres of land, or 3,840 homesteads
100 acres each-It is estimated that the
water thus provided will increase the
value of the land in question by $3 per
acre, or an aggregate of $l.850.C00.
