H.&szARi)'s GAZETTE, NOVEMBER 14,, educating the young, and by training the adult to habits of industry and sobriety. The Rev. gentleman spoke of Charlottetown as the place which had given birth to the mission. of its gradual and steady progress since that time. As before the Russian tron; - holds, the sap of the bcsiegers miide steady and continued progress, whilst the tolegi-aph wire flashed to an impatient public the oft repeated taIe,“notliingnew froiii the Criinea;" so though he had no signal vi :t.oi-ies to proclaim, tho_woi-k was progressing, not less surely to its_ ultimate success-—that steady advances were being made, 8.: obstacles ovorcouie-—thcir laiigiiage,tlicii- ous- toms, their liabits had heeii learned; their pi-e- judices had yielded, their conlideiico had been gained, their love and nfieetions (in many in- stances) won, thus the sap of love had destroyed many of the out-works opposing, and had ad- vanced to the very Mali oil’-—-or Key of the stronghold of the superstition and ignorance which has so long cm-ircled them. He also coinbated the prevalent notion that the Indian will not work—by the fact that the eight or ten families living on the ini.-xiioii premises had re- alized the sum of £400 as the proceeds of their industr . In presenting their Report of the Turnip Crop in Queen’s County, the Iris ectors have great pleasure in congratulating t e Society on the high averages which, notwithstanding the generally unfavourable impression regarding this year's Cro , the returns show, thus es- tablishing the act, the Turnip is about the most sure crop that can be raised in this Island, which, taking into consideration, that with tolerable cultivation, 1000 bushels per acre can be readily obtained, shows that, at least accord- ing to the British standard of agriculture excellence, there can be no Countr in the world, whose farming might be carric on more successfully, or when, taking into consideration the favourable state of the market, it might be made more profitable in ii. pecuniary sense. The Inspectors however, feel it their duty to say, that in their 0 inion the recent regulation of the Committee or excluding the giiincrs of any former prize from com etitian, is not cal- cu ated to keep up the big character of the Island as a I‘urnip-growin country, a fact the think cl‘ the highest importance. The excIusion of the gainers of a first prize, and that onl for it limited period, they think would elfoct al that could be reasonably desired, for preventing on thin like a mono Iy in prize taking; and t oy t ink further tiatit would rather stimulate exertion, than otherwise, to have to enter the lists with the old leaders in Turni cultivation, who never raise loss than 1000 usliels per Acre; at all events, they think the society should kee up as a standing fact that such is generally one. The Inspectors would also refer with plea- sure to the increased desire slieivn by the co lo for agricultural information whenever tie n- spectors had an opportunity of conversation : and to the rapid Iv]! improving state of the Coun- try. Any one w o Iias only been here but for a few years, cannot fail of being struck with the iniproved appearance of the various fiiriiis, R’ 5‘-'— ’ 1-!-.'
